    non clickable systray icons

i have winstep xtreme 11.6 install and after doing the windows updates, installing the latest zonealarm, and the latest o&o defrag when i double-click or right-click either the zonealarm or o&o defrag nextstart systray icons nothing happens. now if i exit winstep xtreme and double-click or right-click either icon in the windows systray the icons work fine. also za will not launch from the nextstart start menu or the windows start menu, but o&o will launch just fine from both. all other icons work just fine from the nextstart systray. i just want to know if anyone knows if microsoft maybe changed the way the systray icons are now handled, and if this might be the problem, and if so knows of a possible fix for it.

    1. did the windows updates about a week after patch tuesday
    2. installed the latest zonealarm
    3. installed the latest o&o defrag

I will try to help. First I think you will find out that installing 3rd party program to do things that Windows 7 does quiet well all by its self can cause problems. Many of these programs don't play well with W7. Windows 7 built in defrag will get the job done as good as anything I have tried. This winstep xtreme could also be causing the problem. Try removing it and see if things work as they should. I haven't used Zone Alarm in many years so I will let others that have help you their.

if you are implying a problem with winstep i can tell from experience that is not the case. the creator of winstep stays on top of any bugs. as for the zonealarm security suite if i wasn't running it i would be using kaspersky or eset. i'm not about to trust my system security to the makers of my os(too many eggs in one basket). as for software for defragging at least through vista people know the windows defrager was worthless. my personal take is that either microsoft changed how systray shortcuts are handled, or both the makers of zonealarm and o&o changed how their systray shortcuts are handled. my bet would be that microsoft goofed on one of the updates. that is normally the case with system problems.

I'm not implying anything. Just suggestions, when and or if you remove the program and it doesn't help you can always install it again. It's a process of elimination. IMHO it does not sound like a Windows 7 problem, but to each his/her own thoughts.

Another suggestion if I may. Run sfc /scannow from cmd prompt. If it finds and fixes a problem run it two more times of course as admin.

i ran sfc before posting and no problems found. if it was just za or o&o i might agree with you that it doesn't look like a 7 problem, but it's both programs systray icons that cannot be clicked on in the nextstart systray. i posted the some question in the winstep forums a few days ago. if it was a winstep problem jorge would of already let me know that it was. so for now my focus is going to be on what microsoft might have done.
