    edit startup programs

    I know about MSCONFIG.
the problem is, when you use MSCONFIG to deselect programs from starting up, you force your computer into "Safemode".

I once used a ms command that allowed me to disable \ enable all programs that start up with windows, other than MSCONFIG.
It did not force my windows into Safemode.

which command is it that allows you to disable programs from starting up with windows,

    BESIDES MSCONFIG ? anyone know.?

There is a Microsoft program called Autoruns from Windows Sysinternals...

The best and easiest to use:

    Thankyou
But i refuse to install more crap into my registry, just to disable other programs from starting up.

there is a built in windows command very similar to msconfig,
which gives access to disabling programs from start up,
without limiting your system to safemode, or, "Selective startup" limitations.

I wouldnt mind toggeling between "selective startup" and normal,
but I do not feel like reselecting every @#$% item to disable every time I go back to selective startup.

You don't need to install anything mate... You have two versions: Autoruns (633Kb) and Autorunsc(528kb) (comand-line).

Take a look on the link that I gave to you and see on page the commands for it...

    Simple and easy

every noob in the book recommends "msconfig"
they remember to tell everyone "once you reset, it will warn you that your running in selective mode" just press OK. its fine".

then they fail to remind people that running in "selective startup" is not compatable with all installation processses, etc etc, sometimes youll be lucky and the programmer bullet proofed the issue with a message "Can not access due to safemode",
half the time you will just get a random windows error "well It seems to have failed, and uh, no clues here" message.

If you could deselect programs with MSCONFIG without running in "selective startup".
    it wouldnt be an issue.

i always check msconfig after installing drivers or software, and i generally disable things that just aren't needed.

i have never entered 'Safemode', i just untick entries in the 'startup' tag with no bother.

i wonder if this is a UAC thing? (i foolishly disable mine)

also the autoruns doesn't install anything bad into your registry, and it will give you TOTAL control of your startup at a very low level - but be careful with it - it's very easy to disable something pretty vital!

*edit* sorry for late post - you've got to be quick around here!

    I have to admit
Autoruns is worth emailing myself in Gmail for perma access.

But I will want to find that other windows command X_x

LFB, thanks for the app. Downloaded, will test later.

Been using MSCONFIG sense it was introduced into the windows OSs (including win 7), and as yet have never been put into or, forced into the safe mode. My UAC is at the highest possible setting and it has not forced me into the safe mode. Yes, when you go into msconfig and deselect startup programs then do a restart the selective screen comes up, albeit selecting do not show again stops the popup from coming up again. So my question is how is this wrong if it does what you want (just a question)? :)

    Hello Rob,

You also have this option to enable and disable startup programs in Windows 7.

    Startup Programs - Change

    Hope this helps,
