"Freezing"

Hi

my Win7 (RC7100 i think - it's on my home PC and I am at work) 'freezes'.

Let me explain, I turn on my PC, login and wait until all services have started. My CPU/RAM meter shows about 12% usage on CPU and 25% on RAM usage. I launch IE8 (a 5 tab-set homepage) and wait for it to load, completely.

When I then click on any link in one of those pages (my bank, Microsoft, a couple of music and general news pages) the screen, and mouse, just freezes. I can not move my mouse for up to 5 minutes.

Ctrl-Alt-Tab will NOT bring up Task Manager.

A few minutes, up to 5 minutes, later, system starts to work fine. And will for either short or long periods of time again then....just freezes again for up to - yep 5 minutes. No mouse action, no keyboard action, no Task Manager...

I have disabled all extensions, search and accelerators in Tools/Manage AddOns, but this doesnt seem to have helped.

I am using a Microsoft Laser 5000 wireless mouse and a Microsoft wireless keyboard. 2 separate wireless "receivers"...could this be the problem?

It's infuriating! Any help or guidance would be appreciated.

Tks for response Dwarf....I actually was only thinking of that 'receiver' possibility as I was typing my original post. I will try different combos out when I get home to see if that indeed is the problem...I'll let you know the outcome.

I finally had time on my home PC yesterday to see if I could get to the bottom of this. Indeed, I had to unplug the receiver for the mouse and use the one receiver for both the Keyboard and Mouse once I let the OS find solutions to the problem. I was so happy I actually failed to notice how/what I clicked on to "Find the Solution".

Also, I had to reinstall Roxio Easy Media Creator 9 as the initial install saw me get a prompt that "Windows has blocked a DLA driver from installing - do you want to try and fix this problem?" message pop-up. Clicked Yes. It went thru it's routine, said it was 'fixed" but whenever I opened Roxio I had a message "Drive not detected".

Unistalled, reinstalled Roxio, rebooted, got the message "Windows has blocked a DLA driver from installing - do you want to try and fix this problem?" - clicked on NO and also checked "Do not show this message again" and bingo, Roxio works.

Windows Media Player is a bit hit and miss I find. I put in a CD, it finds it, but when I click on a song to PLAY it, the Media Player simply "ticks" the song as being there, moves onto the next one, ticks it, etc. Takes about 30 secs and all songs on the CD are "found" but cant be played.

Restart Media Player after killing its Service, and it's fine. Bit hit and miss.

Loaded windowsblinds (is that the name - to change the skin etc?) and my system just semi-froze with odd looking fonts/screens. No problem, found - after 10 minutes trying to find my way thru a 'blanked out' Control Panel!! and did a System restore, all good.

Good day...I got Win7 up and running just fine. I like it more than Vista which I incidentally really like too. Next...time to explore Libraries....

I got my new HP Quad Core and Windows 7 and installed Roxio Easy Media Creator 9. After that my Win Explorer began to freeze all the time so I uninstalled the Roxio and the problem went away. I reinstalled Roxio and the problem returned. I uninstalled Roxio and the problem went away. Interestingly the Microsoft web site indicates that Roxio Easy Media Creator is compatible with Win 7. So much for their knowledge. I've had several other problems with drivers and incompatible equipment (e.g. external LG DVD writer I bought in 06). I had none of these problems with XP (I never went to Vista thank goodness) all the years I've had it. I'm keeping my XP machine for a while because I know it works. I been with Windows software for over 20 years and things just seem to keep getting more unstable. Does Microsoft really care????????
