Windows 7: Screen shut-off requires hard shut down

Screen shut-off requires hard shut down

I work on my Gateway while sitting on the couch. I surf the Internet and then watch TV. I surf a little more, and then I watch more TV. Some nights, when I slide the computer near me because I've shifted in my seat, the screen will go black and I have to push the On/Off switch until the computer shuts down. The computer, when the screen goes black, is still on, but no fingerpad strokes or combination of key stokes will turn the screen back on. Super frustrated about having to turn the computer off "the wrong way" a couple of nights a week. Any advice??? Thanks!

Welcome to Seven forums Matthew00.
Does the screen turn off only when you move it close to you?

Thank you.
No. It happens when I move it towards me, away from me or from side to side. Very strange phenomenon.

Since this happens only while moving the laptop around, I will guess you have a bad monitor or connection to it. Moving it would cause the screen section to "flop" around some.

You could try updating your graphics drivers to see if that would help.

Is there a site I should go to for updating my graphics drivers?

Thanks!

Here are AMD (ATI) and nVIDIA sites
Latest AMD Catalyst Video Driver for Windows 7

NVIDIA Driver Downloads - Advanced Search
You'll need to fill in the type of card you have. If it is not one of these see Gateway Support - Drivers & Downloads they may have a Gateway specific driver for your laptop.
