    Hard drives became switched

64installed on c, win 7 later installed an d. dual boot has been working perfectly until
something caused the drives to switch. now win 7 starts ok but looks for all it's files on c, which is locked.
vista starts up fine, and sees all it's files on c as it should.

my windows 7 repair disk, created at start of win 7, does not correct problem, nor does system restore.

4 days of trying to fix leaves this nerd vry humble.

I need help, which will be GREATLY APPRECIATED.

    THANKS!

Boot in to Vista and download EasyBCD (Just Google EasyBCD and you'll find it). It should display the operating systems installed on your system. See if this is showing the right drives for the operating systems.

Edit: After reading your post more carefully, it seems you can boot in to 7, so you wouldn't need to download this.

Answering SIW2's questions might be able to help us better.

    Can you elaborate please?

You can boot into 7 fine?

What drive letter does it declare for itself, and for Vista. ?

How do you mean 7 looks for all it's files on the Vista partition- do you mean it looks for your ( i.e. user ) files on the Vista partition ?

    thanks for the help.

easybcd shows vista 64 on c drive

windows 7 IS on L drive. L DRIVE has all of the win 7 programs i downloaded
yet when i run win 7 AND TRY TO START A program it tries to open from disk c rather than L.

easybcd loaded onto disk L CANNOT BE OPENED.

WINDOWS 7 looks for MY ( i.e. user ) files on the Vista partition, DRIVE C

    THANKS AGN

WHEN RUNNING WINDOWS 7 i now am unable to use speech recognition, yet find all speech files intact in windows 7 L DRIVE, YET win 7 tries to retreive sapisvr from c drive, which is not available.

FIREFOX WORKs FINE, and i am able to see/send all my email on windows 7. same with vista 64 on c drive, but the bookmarks are different.

    many thanks again

SIW2 might be able to help even more if you answered his questions.

    Post for him 2 listings:
    One from booted Vista,
and one from booted Win 7.

Each listing should show results from:
    diskpart
    list disk
    list volume
    exit

Screen captures of Disk Management under
each booted OS would probably help too...

Thank you sir!! EasyBCD is a real pearl.

There are a total of two entries listed in the vista Bootloader. Bootloader timeout: 30 seconds
    default OS: windows seven

    Entry #1
    Name: windows 7
    BCD ID: {default}
    Drive: Lp:\
    Bootloader path:\windows\system 32\winload.exe
    Windows directory: \windows

    Entry #2

    Name: Microsoft Windows vista
    BCD ID: {current }
    Drives: C:\
    Bootloader path:\windows\system 32\window.exe
    Windows directory: \windows

This VY humble windows nerd, goshannon, thanks you all again.

    diskpart on c drive results in C:\Users\NEW ADMINISTRATOR\BACKUPS\08-12-19 0203PM\Program Files\Windows AIK\Tools\ia64\Servicing\GlobalInstallOrder.xml

list part on C brings up multiple items, including following, at top of list. Microsoft Office Communications Server
    2007 Resource Kit Tools

    list volume no results.

on windows 7, the results of drive L were not obtainable,
WHILE THE WIN 7 OS IS ACTUALLY ON DRIVE D.

You can boot into 7 fine? YES, IT APPEARS to boot into 7 but the 7 user programs are not available

What drive letter does it declare for itself, drive C

BUT easybcd indicates 7 to be on drive L.

and for Vista: DRIVE C, CONFIRMED BY EASYBCD

How do you mean 7 looks for all it's files on the Vista partition- do you mean it looks for your ( i.e. user ) files on the Vista partition ?
goshannon answers:YES, it looks for 7 ( i.e. user ) files on the C drive, the Vista partition
