Cannot open folder or continue task because file or folder is open?

Hi all, this is my first post. I'm not sure which category this fits in, so I'll post here first.

I just got a new Samsung RC420 laptop with Win7 Home Premium edition OS. When I was installing a software last night, a message pops up and tells me I cannot continue installation until I close a certain program (in this case it was Adobe Updater, which was not opened at all).

Today, I am trying to open "my briefcase" from a USB thumb, but a message pops up telling me I cannot open "my briefcase" as it appears a file in it is already open. But nothing else is open on my computer. It was my first time opening anything from the USB thumb.

Is this a common problem with win7? How can I rectify it? Please help.

    Thanks,
    Ed

No this is not a common problem with Windows 7.

Looks like you need to use the program Unlocker. This program works for both x86 and x64 platforms.

Download and install the program. This will add an entry "Unlocker" to your right click context menu.

Whenever you face a problem mentioned above, on the target file right click and choose "Unlocker". This will show any program / process currently accessing the file. It also gives you an option to kill that program / process so that you can go ahead and do whatever you wish to accomplish.

    ed,
We need to get at the source of your problem.

    The problem is not normal.

What AV software are you using?

Download and have MalwareBytes run a FULL SCAN - not a quick scan - and let us know the results.

Use the link in my sig. Do NOT google MalwareBytes as there you will find the scales tipped to send you to malware which you are trying to avoid.

Use the link in my sig.

You could also check msconfig and see if you have any auto up dates checked like Adobe.
