maybe it's the particular apps that are badly behaved and need to be rewritten - my icons remember what i want them to do, so i don't think it's 7.

And I thought I was crazy. Ok, keep the comments down.

It happened to me ALL the time in XP. Not so much in Vista, And I have not noticed it in W7, yet.

And yes it is incredibly annoying.

I searched and tried different solutions and never identified the culprit.

But as has been mentioned, in moving from XP>Vista>W7 (actually triple booting right now) not only did the OS change but my apps and/or the app versions changed.

I always suspected it was an app specific to me as it did not/does not occur on any of my clients XP or Vista boxes (thank goodness).

Sometimes they appear after the boot, sometimes not.

Well in one way i'm happy there's other sufferers out there, as they say shared suffering is double the fun.
the Smilies i uninstalled immediately, but they had the nasty habit of changing from hidden to show all the time.

So i guess it's still OS related, with Vista i've already tried all the tricks (reg hacking whatever) to no avail.

Oh well, if that's the worst ....

It happened to me a few times, but once again I was able to trace the problem back to registry/temp file cleaning program. In my case it was CCleaner.Just had to adjust cleaning settings and never had issue again.

yes i did that too with Vista (though not with ccleaner) but the issue kept returning after a while. I guess that it's the frequency with which you min to tray.

I hate a cluttered desktop, but i also don't like lot's of icons on the taskbar. So i minimize most to the tray. It's pretty full at times, but i only keep the most frequently used icons visible.

Though the issue is less pronounced then with Vista so there is progress

no it's a double boot. I seem to notice a pattern though. It seems that apps where you can set the Titlebar Close button to minimize to tray are the most prone to disappearing from the tray.

Sofar Mailwasher, Speedfan and Comodo disappeared regularly.
