    Warning: Dumb question ahead.

What is the correct way to resume from Sleep?
    I'm working on a Compaq SR1750NX desktop,
    Win7 Ult 32 bit
    Athlon X2 4600
    2 GB DDR400 RAM
Moving the mouse and tapping keys won't wake it. Holding the power button in cause it to shut down and immediately restart and there's no monitor display. I don't want to pull the power and risk losing data.

If the hard disk is Idle you are not likely to loose data by pulling the power.

I do it often enough sorry seagate....

Perhaps once it's off removing the battery for a few mins will resolve your issue? Then possibly check device manager setting for keyboard and mouse to check they have permission to wake from sleep.

Well the HDD light was on, but I yanked the power cable out and it booted up fine. I put it back to sleep and the mouse woke it this time. It seems if it is in sleep for a longer time it won't wake up.
    Thanks.

Check if you have any Dumps as you might have had a sleep BSOD (Unlikely but a possibility)

you might reload some of your drivers. Windows sleep resumption issues can be due to an imperfect driver, even when device manager shows them all to be fine.
