Windows 7: Windows Explorer is not responding when I try to erase DVD-rw discs

Half of the time when I try to use a RW disc more than once. In other words erase the disc to burn something new to it. Windows explorer (not responding error) is in a malfunction loop. Also during this occurrence the dvd is rendered useless for future use. These discs are new and clean with no scratches. I bought two dvd multi drives. They are identical and installed drive D: & E:. Purchased at newegg, they are sold as Liteon brand. Software identifies them as ATAPI iHAS124 B. I have thought about downloading new drivers however I have had some trouble identifying this model on Liteon's website. The other half of the time I attempt to use my DVD-RW's the event is successful. I would be grateful if someone would tell me how to remedy this situation.

Highly recommend updating the drivers first. What is/are the make and model number of these drives? What are the make and model numbers given on the packing slip that was enclosed with the order?

Does this happen with any brand of DVD/RW? some blank disks are more prone to errors.
I can't find that model number on LiteOn's site either, maybe because it is an OEM version which has another retail boxed model number. I think what you want is firmware but I found nothing on that either. I used to have two of those identical drives and found them troublesome.

Try this: go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Device Manager find your drives' entry and uninstall both of them and reboot. Perhaps Windows will find another driver for them.

They are OEM. I have uninstalled. No help. I found a firmware update and and it didn't help either. I wonder if I should replace them. I really don't mind replacing them except for the fact that they are fairly new. I just would hate it if new drives didn't resolve this issue.

They were only 20 dollars each.

With my experience with them, I don't blame you if you replace.
Let's try this first, SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker use option one, run at boot.

Are you using a 3rd part burning program?

I am going to try the scannow command and will let you know the results. No I'm not using 3rd party software, just windows explorer. Maybe I should try 3P software.
