Windows Explorer is not responding when I try to erase DVD-rw discs Half of the time when I try to use a RW disc more than once. In other words erase the disc to burn something new to it. Windows explorer (not responding error) is in a malfunction loop. Also during this occurrence the dvd is rendered useless for future use. These discs are new and clean with no scratches. I bought two dvd multi drives. They are identical and installed drive D: & E:. Purchased at newegg, they are sold as Liteon brand. Software identifies them as ATAPI iHAS124 B. I have thought about downloading new drivers however I have had some trouble identifying this model on Liteon's website. The other half of the time I attempt to use my DVD-RW's the event is successful. I would be grateful if someone would tell me how to remedy this situation.
Thanks, Marshall | My System Specs |

Highly recommend updating the drivers first. What is/are the make and model number of these drives? What are the make and model numbers given on the packing slip that was enclosed with the order? | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Custom built OS Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit CPU AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Motherboard Gigabyte GA-MA790X-DS4 Memory GSkill 4 X 2 GB PC 8500 Graphics Card XFX Radeon HD 6790 D Sound Card On board RealTek HD Monitor(s) Displays Dual monitors:Samsung SyncMaster S20B300 Screen Resolution 1600 X 900 Keyboard Logitech G510 Mouse Razor DeathAdder PSU Ultra X4 750 watt fully modular Case Thermaltake Overseer RX 1 full tower Cooling Core-Contact 92 mm CPU Cooler Hard Drives Seagate Barracuda 1TB (primary)

Does this happen with any brand of DVD/RW? some blank disks are more prone to errors.
I can't find that model number on LiteOn's site either, maybe because it is an OEM version which has another retail boxed model number. I think what you want is firmware but I found nothing on that either. I used to have two of those identical drives and found them troublesome.
Try this: go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Device Manager find your drives' entry and uninstall both of them and reboot. Perhaps Windows will find another driver for them. | My System Specs | | Computer type PC/Desktop System Manufacturer/Model Number Home Built Desktop By DataTech OS Windows 7 Ultimate X64 SP1 CPU Intel i5-2550K, Differing ~4.4-4.8GHz No built in GPU Motherboard ASUS P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3 Memory 16GB G.Skill Sniper 2133MHz 4x4GB Graphics Card ASUS ENGTX460 DirectCU/2DI/1GD5 GeForce GTX 460 Sound Card Onboard Realtek 5-1 Monitor(s) Displays Samsung P2570HD Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Keyboard Old, beat-up Dell USB From 10 yrs Ago Mouse Gigabyte m6900 wired PSU Corsair HX650W Case Inwin Dragon Rider Cooling Hyper 212 EVO w/two Noctua fans, push-pull, @1300 RPM Hard Drives Crucial M4 128GB for OS, 750GB Seagate MomentusXT for data, 500GB Seagate Constellation for storage Internet Speed 8-19 Mbs down, 3-4 Mbs up Comcast Cable Antivirus Norton Internet Security Browser IE 9, Opera when needed Other Info 4 case fans, LG BluRay-RE, ASUS DVD-RW, Mr. Fusion power generator with flux capacitor, 1.21 gigawatts. |

They are OEM. I have uninstalled. No help. I found a firmware update and and it didn't help either. I wonder if I should replace them. I really don't mind replacing them except for the fact that they are fairly new. I just would hate it if new drives didn't resolve this issue.
They were only 20 dollars each. | My System Specs | | Computer type PC/Desktop System Manufacturer/Model Number Custom Build OS Windows 7 Ultimate x64 CPU Intel i7 2600K Motherboard Gigabyte Technology Co. - Model GA-Z68X-UD5-B3 Memory G.SKILL Sniper Series 16GB (4 x 4GB) 1866 Graphics Card Gigabyte AMD Radeon HD 7870 GV-R787OC-2GD Sound Card Asus Xonar Essence STX Monitor(s) Displays HP 2711x 27 inch Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Keyboard Logitech K800 Illuminated Wireless Mouse Logitech M600 Touch Mouse PSU CORSAIR Professional Series HX650 (Modular) Case CASE ZALMAN | Z9 R Cooling COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 EVO Hard Drives SSD OCZ Vertex 4 256 GB

With my experience with them, I don't blame you if you replace.
Let's try this first, SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker use option one, run at boot.
Are you using a 3rd part burning program? | My System Specs | | Computer type PC/Desktop System Manufacturer/Model Number Home Built Desktop By DataTech OS Windows 7 Ultimate X64 SP1 CPU Intel i5-2550K, Differing ~4.4-4.8GHz No built in GPU Motherboard ASUS P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3 Memory 16GB G.Skill Sniper 2133MHz 4x4GB Graphics Card ASUS ENGTX460 DirectCU/2DI/1GD5 GeForce GTX 460 Sound Card Onboard Realtek 5-1 Monitor(s) Displays Samsung P2570HD Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Keyboard Old, beat-up Dell USB From 10 yrs Ago Mouse Gigabyte m6900 wired PSU Corsair HX650W Case Inwin Dragon Rider Cooling Hyper 212 EVO w/two Noctua fans, push-pull, @1300 RPM Hard Drives Crucial M4 128GB for OS, 750GB Seagate MomentusXT for data, 500GB Seagate Constellation for storage Internet Speed 8-19 Mbs down, 3-4 Mbs up Comcast Cable Antivirus Norton Internet Security Browser IE 9, Opera when needed Other Info 4 case fans, LG BluRay-RE, ASUS DVD-RW, Mr. Fusion power generator with flux capacitor, 1.21 gigawatts. |

I am going to try the scannow command and will let you know the results. No I'm not using 3rd party software, just windows explorer. Maybe I should try 3P software. | My System Specs | | Computer type PC/Desktop System Manufacturer/Model Number Custom Build OS Windows 7 Ultimate x64 CPU Intel i7 2600K Motherboard Gigabyte Technology Co. - Model GA-Z68X-UD5-B3 Memory G.SKILL Sniper Series 16GB (4 x 4GB) 1866 Graphics Card Gigabyte AMD Radeon HD 7870 GV-R787OC-2GD Sound Card Asus Xonar Essence STX Monitor(s) Displays HP 2711x 27 inch Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Keyboard Logitech K800 Illuminated Wireless Mouse Logitech M600 Touch Mouse PSU CORSAIR Professional Series HX650 (Modular) Case CASE ZALMAN | Z9 R Cooling COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 EVO Hard Drives SSD OCZ Vertex 4 256 GB
