Recover damaged partition

A friend brought over a hard drive from a damaged laptop. I put it in an enclosure and connected it to my computer. The drive spins up but is not recognized by Windows. Disk Management sees the partition and says it is not initialized, but when I tell it to initialize it, it says "the device is not ready".

MiniTool Power Data Recovery, in its Recover Partition function, simply does not see the drive.

Any ideas what else I might try?

Thanks

Try using EaseUS Partition Master and see if the program recognizes the device.

Try opening the PC case and connecting directly to the motherboard via SATA/IDE (which ever it is) and the Pc power supply.

With HD connected directly via SATA/IDE, boot free Partition Wizard CD, from the Wizards tab select Partition Recovery Wizard.

Check the result which matches the known size and restore.

If it cannot find the partition then it is destroyed and you need data recovery software like Recuva. Recuva - Features

It depends on the extent of the damage. If Windows says it needs to initialize that could be the end of it.

Get a hold of GetDataBack for NTFS program and see how you go.

Did you try to initialise the disk as in the following Disk Management screenshot by right clicking on the disk image and choosing to initialise? (if that is possible in your case)

Thanks for all the help. We were trying a few different applications, when suddenly the drive worked for a while. Not sure if it was an app or just intermittant issue, but we got his files of it.

Thanks
