Seeing this is going nowhere, could you please explain why you would like to change the default behavior? I mean, both left and right click already have very important functions. What's wrong with the defaults: mouse-over = preview, left click = restore <> minimize, right click = context menu (jump list).

I'm of course not completely 100% sure about this but I think this kind of essential basic functions of Windows can not be changed. Especially when you talk about a program with only 1 open window, I really can see no way to separate the behavior from a program with two or more windows.

Does it really matter WHY I want the functionality?

Maybe this would go somewhere if anyone had an actual answer to the question.

To do that you'd not be able to open the window, just a preview. Left click can only open, minimize, or bring focus to a window. Right click can only show the jump list. Neither can be changed.
Incorrect, 7 Taskbar Tweaker can change some these, but not in the way I am looking for.

You can disable the thumbnail preview completely. But as Kari and Britton explained, it's pretty much impossible to make it do what you want. It's just not designed to work that way.

Edit: I had a look at the Taskbar Tweaker app you mentioned - still, to have the taskbar perform different functions depending on how many taskbar buttons are actually there would be pretty difficult to implement. Maybe ask the author of this program and ask him what he thinks?

Quite often it matters, we have solved a lot of issues here after understanding why user wants something special. Understanding an issue is important.

I regret I tried to be nice and polite with you, to find out more in order to be able to assist you. Maybe this would go somewhere if you changed your attitude.
