    Freezing after update

I've been running 7100 build 64bit for the past few weeks and everything has been pretty good, up until the last update (KB970420) about last Tuesday (July 28th). Ever since then my system freezes up before I can run anything. Windows 7 boots up fine, I get past the log in screen and my desktop loads fine but when I try to run anything(Firefox, IE8, even just Windows Explorer) it freezes up.

The only thing that I've found worked, was doing a system restore to before the update.

Just wondering if there's a fix for this. It's getting very troublesome.

    Hi Alan

    Welcome to sevenforums

there is a way to prevent that from happening. first, if you know when it started happening you can un-install that update, and go into windows update and hide it so it isn't downloaded again.

Well I guess I was wrong. I restored to before the said update and turned off the auto-install feature. But I'm still getting freezes at start up.

I managed to open task manager before everything froze up and my CPU usage was at 0% and Idle Processes were at 99. The only program that seemed to start up properly was my firewall. Then everything else just doesn't run.

    Suggestions?

If you boot in safe mode does the problem still happen?

Will it run long enough so you can start MSCONFIG and disable all STARTUP programs?

If so you may be able ot isolate the offending program. Or if it still locks up then it is Windows or one of the drivers.

Everything is fine when I boot in safe mode.

I'll try running MSCONFIG before it locks up.
