For those hung up on 'Specs', these are the original system specs:

Windows XP Pro; 2.16GHz Core 2 Duo T7400; 1GB PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM 666MHz; Nvidia GeForce Go 7400 256MB; Fujitsu MHV2100BH PL 100GB 5,400rpm

A quick look would suggest not enough RAM - I'm surprised XP runs smoothly on it - Although W7 will run on 1gb, most people on here would advice 2gb+

XP Requirements...
Quote:

Pentium 233-megahertz (MHz) processor or faster (300 MHz is recommended)
  • At least 64 megabytes (MB) of RAM (128 MB is recommended)
  • At least 1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available space on the hard disk
  • CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive
  • Keyboard and a Microsoft Mouse or some other compatible pointing device
  • Video adapter and monitor with Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher resolution
  • Sound card
  • Speakers or headphones
System requirements for Windows XP operating systems

Why would anyone be "hung up" on the most important factor? Blindly believing what the upgrade advisor tells you is a mistake. For example, The upgrade advisor tells me all of my company systems aren't capable of running Windows 7, because it complains about two of my network printers and the anti-virus software I had installed. However, the computers in question originally shipped with Windows 7, and were downgraded at the time. All computers in my company are now running Windows 7, without issue.

In short, don't bash people for offering the proper advice and asking the most relevant questions.

That being said, a simple memory upgrade to 2 or 3 GB, depending on how the current memory is installed (how many sticks...1 or 2), Windows 7 would run fine on that system for the basics.

1. I do not need to update my specs. I know what card I have installed and if I was to have an issue I would state it in my post.

2. You are all hung up on specs - The first and simplest step the OP can take is run the upgrade advisor. Where do I say 'Treat the result as gospel' and quote 'Blindly believe' what upgrade advisor tells us?

3. Why quote minimal requirements for XP? I'm aware of them, but the original specs for the PC are 1gb - all I did was point out that XP would struggle on that.

4. Nobody is bashing anybody for offering advice - I am offering an alternative that the OP could easily run and report back before anyone advises him on minimum system requirements.

Rant over, back to the thread.........

The first step is to look at the specs. Quoting specs on a system is something the owner should do within seconds (as you alluded to in your point #1). Then it takes another second or so of reasoning to see if the system is able to run Windows 7 or not.

I don't even run Adviros on systems anymore, or instruct anyone else to do so. The proof is in the specs. THAT is gospel, so it easily trumps what some little software app will randomy guess at. To somone who's not tech savvy, the results can be very misleading, which is yet another major reason why I avoid recommending it.

You follow your own methods personally, but when making recommendations for others, stick to the best answers. Knowing the specs is crucial for that. Upgrade Advisor doesn't give any accurate info, such as my printer example. If you use that as your primary decision maker, you won't be giving out accurate or valid advice. Use knowledge and experience over an app.

As you wish.

I believe I offered good advice in good faith. I believe my methods to be correct and have never let me down.

If you believe your way to be correct then so be it if and we both arrive at the same place no harm done I guess.

My apologies.
