Laptop Won't Hibernate after Virus Removal

Hi! Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide.

I recently removed a fake windows restore virus and now, unlike before, when I select hibernate, the laptop actually just shuts down. When I restart everything I was working is gone. Obviously something is corrupted. Is there a way to repair that?

To get rid of the virus I used a combination of Webroot, a program called trojan-killer and system restore.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

My suggestion is to first turn off system restore, Second down load Malware Bytes Anti-malware, Download CCleaner or Glary Utilities for registry repair, all of these are free, Make sure you do all of this in safe mode with networking. I am sure that somone with more experience may have more information and direct you further with your issues.

Karl has you on the right track to resetting Hibernate. You may need to delete and rebuild the hiberfile.

In addition I would run Malwarebytes to make extra sure you are clean now. Some viruses are never cleaned up and require a clean reinstall.

You can test hibernate by setting it temporarily to 2 minutes while setting sleep to 1 minute then sit back and watch.

I agree with Karlsnooks and Gregrocker, as I mention there is someone with a little more experience than I. Like everyone else I am still learning, Make sure you run Malware Bytes.

Thank you for the help and excellent suggestions.

I have followed your instructions but unfortunately, it's seems to hibernate but then when I restart I get the message "windows has not shut down properly" and its as if I didn't hibernate and just shut the laptop down.

I notice one distinction. When I turned hibernation off and tried to restart, I received the "normal" warning that Skype was still running, and then I just "force restart."

but when I turned the hibernation back on and tried to hibernate, I did not get this same message about skype. Instead, the message was "background programs are still running" and the space where the programs would be listed is blank.

I've rebooted too between deleting the hiberfile.sys and rebuilding it but to no avail.

If you have any other ideas, they would be greatly appreciated. And thank you for the time and knowledge you're offering to folks like me.

What were the results of the full Malwarebytes scan? What AV are you running. Install MSE or Avast 6 to also run a full scan.

It sounds like there may be some corruption of System files. Try running SFC -SCANNOW Command

If this fails consider a Repair Install as a last resort before Clean Reinstalling Windows 7

Hey, Just a thought, I seems that Skype is causing this issue, Why not uninstall Skype and see what happens and then maybe reinstall Skype. Again just a thought.
