What exactly are you trying to register ?
Sibelius 6 - music notation software. The problem had nothing to do with my PC problems (except that the software had been wiped out by the reinstall). I had already upgraded to the next version of the software and they don't automatically allow reregistration of back versions.

Maybe this is out of content, But just a thought, I was at a privately owned local computer store and listened to the technician tell one of his customers to install windows 7 and download the first service pack then he would be albe to register windows 7. Again just a suggestion.

I've got no problem registering Windows so I don't think that applies here. It reminds me of something I meant to ask, though. My PC came with Win7 Home installed and with the installation DVD. I almost immediately bought the upgrade to Pro and did an "Anytime" upgrade. If I were to do my own reinstallation of Windows I would want to install Pro, not Home. Does Microsoft offer installation DVDs to people that purchased Anytime upgrades?

You'll want to save a Win7 backup image to use in place of reinstall:
Backup Complete Computer - Create an Image Backup

You can then schedule regular image and file backups in the Backup Center.

If Win7 becomes irreparable then simply reimage the latest backup image. System Image Recovery

If necessary, you can reinstall Home Premium from its Reinstallation DVD, or by running Factory Recovery from its partition or Disks. To get a perfect clean reinstall follow these steps: Reinstalling Windows. It should self-activate so you can immediately insert the Pro Anytime Upgrade key to unlock all features.
