Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit issues with desktop freezing/ other issues

    Hi all,
Going to try and make this brief, "try" being the operative word here..

I have a Gateway PC running Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit
4 gigs of ram but obviously not all useable (yet)
    Dual core processor
    Nvidia 9800GT graphics Card
    Corsair 650 watt PSU
    HT Omega Striker 7.1 Souncard..

    Kaspersky Internet Security 2012
    Nvidia 280.65 driver (latest)

Basically have done a lot of upgrades on this PC with the exception of the motherboard and CPU.

Two days ago I noticed when I log into my PC, it will boot up, however shortly after, programs will begin to stop responding. Sometimes the PC will boot into a black screen, other times I get to the desktop and the taskbar clocks and just does not work, then other times as stated, will boot up, work for about 15 to 30 minutes until explorer stops responding and ultimately, everything else I try to use.

Here are some behaviors I noticed:
    • Is probably not hardware related as safe mode does work as should no matter how long I use it
    • Could not install programs - when trying, would freeze or fail (in reg desktop)
    • One weird thing I noticed is that the hard drive activity LED will start doing a repetitive pattern when the system begins to freeze... it will light up for 3 to 4 seconds to show activity, then blink on and off, then light again for the same time, then blink.. same exact pattern over and over again.. all the while you can hear the drive making the same noise, almost as thought its "skipping" (again, safe mode does work fine though)
    • Originally, this started with a blue screen that showed a Logitech webcam file that caused it. I uninstalled the software altogether and reinstalled and seemed to have fixed the BSOD issue
    • That's it for behaviors that I have noticed so far
Here is what I have tried with no success:
    • Start up repair
    • SCNDSK /F
    • SCNDSK /R
    • SFC /SCANNOW
    • MSCONFIG - disabled all non microsoft startup items AND services
I am above the average user as I do some repairs myself but this has me baffled!! I'm at a loss and really do not want to format...

Any ideas on what else I can try or mayve have missed? Anyone else come across something similar? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

    Thanks!

Try working through these troubleshooting steps to utilize the logs and System Resources to find clues, clear all hardware.

There are other tools listed which may help working up to a Repair Install as a last resort before Reinstalling Windows 7 to get a perfect clean baseline reinstall which should solve anything not hardware related.

    Hey gregrocker,
Thanks for your reply and a lot of useful info...
I tried most of the items you have on your list and was going to try the repair install, however I seemed to have spoken too soon as now when I try to boot into the desktop, I am back to just getting a black screen and now the same happens when trying to go into safe mode.

I fear that it may be the hard drive since it does what sounds like that "skipping" noise that I mentioned and that is when things were going down hill and everything started to stop responding...

Anyway, back to the repair install.. since I now cannot boot into the desktop, do you think I can try to just put my retail win 7 ultimate CD in the DVD drive and boot from there with a try at doing an upgrade? Would that work or will it not let me since I already have the same OS? Anything else I can try?

Also, at times I will now get a BSOD when trying to boot up the desktop but cannot read any info from it since it too quickly disappears.. I tried looking at the event log and cannot find any info on it?? Man, this is just kicking my butt!!

    HELP!!

    Thanks again!!

Running a Win7 same-version upgrade install over itself is how a Repair Install is done. But it must be done from the Win7 environment and not boot.

Based on the HD's behavior I'd burn to CD the maker's HD Diagnostic to boot to run an extended scan. Then I'd open a Command Line in System Recovery Options to run Disk Check.

Also in the list of troubleshooting steps listed earlier is to test RAM - Test with Memtest86+ so that the hardware is cleared.

Next , I'd work from the DVD's System Recovery Options to try Startup Repair a few more times, then System Restore as far back as possible.

If these all fail you can copy out your files using DVD: Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console or Paragon Rescue CD.

Then run full factory Recovery from its partition or disks you've made or order from Tech Support, or boot DVD to clean reinstall following these steps to get a perfect one: Reinstalling Windows 7

OK, let me give you some additional info I tried...

Last night I ran the windows memory diagnostic tool whivh did not find any errors..

I had tried the chksdk /f and /r which did find some errors but still have the same issue.

I also tried a system repair several times which at one point, recovered an older install of windows 7 from my orginal disc that I still have connected to the PC in one of my SATA ports. Now when I boot, it gives me the option to boot from windows 7 (first on the list which is currently the one I am having the issue with) and Windows 7 (recovered) I logged into this second OS it recovered and does boot up and work with some minor glitches such as no audio service running and an overall issue with services not running/ permission issues)

I then ran a hard drive diagnostic using HD tune and found that it has 0.6% damaged sectors (2 TB drive). Also when doing a benchmark, there was a huge difference in min and max write speed (I think it was 19mps to 120mps) or something like that, going from memory here...

The drive itself is less than a year old and am having a hard time beleiving that the drive is already damaged..?? Anyway, have not tested too many hard drives so not sure where the benchmark should be...I am also waiting on the software to provide a health rating... for some reason, it was coming up n/a...

Not sure if that second OS system repair recovered is causing a conflict but I dont think so since I tried disconnecting other drives and just running the 2 TB drive solo with the same results...

Finally, at times when trying to boot I will wait and let the computer do whatever its trying to do when trying to load the damaged OS - hard drive LED does have lots of activity but nothing happens unless I let it sit for 15 to 30 minutes. Then either it will blue screen or a window pops up that a wkscli.dll file was damaged. I then replaced the file using the install disk and copied a fresh file and again, still nothing... Just before I gave up last night, I got another pop up window that now says IEloader or loaderIE.exe had an error... going to try and replace that file tonight to see if that fizes the issue..

What is the Win7 installation which Startup Repair recovered, that you'd apparently forgotten? This is highly unusual and the kind of anomaly that causes the problem your report.

Did you reinstall WIn7 on a new HD and just forget the old one and leave it plugged in to a forgotten HD?

Now that it's recovered, are you planning to run two Win7's? Do you already have a Windows Dual Boot menu or are you booting your choice via BIOS? How will you activate both of them?

What I'd do is remove one HD and run Repair again to see if it finds issues with the Win7 you want to keep.

My original game plan was to buy a larger 2 TB drive (that I am having the issue with), clone the original driver over to the new drive and then format and use the original drive as storage... the clone process did not go as planeed and could NOT get the new drive to boot properly, unless (and get this) I left the original drive plugged in and never formatted that original drive/left it the way it was.

Now that I am having these issues, somehow srart up repair automatically set up the dual boot option when I try and boot up. When trying to do one of the repairs, I got a pop up that read windows found a problem with start up and if I wanted to have windows auto repair... I selected to do the repair thinking it would fix my current problem but apparently is when it recovered that original OS install that I was no longer using and set up the dual boot.

As far as doing a repair with the one disk, I'm pretty sure I tried that but will give it another go at it to see if it does anything. I noticed that last 2 or three times I tried a start up repair, it starts up but almost immediately after says it did not find any problems...

You should have asked us earlier. If you clone over and Win7 won't start when source HD is unplugged, you make sure clone is marked Active then run Startup Repair 3 Separate Times.

If it won't start now then you may have corrupted it somehow in the attempts to repair, so I would try cloning again. Best to use the free premium version of Acronis available if any of your drives is WD or Seagate.
