There is no NTFS v6.1 - the current version is NTFS v3.1, I think.
It's backward-compatible all the way to 2000/XP, with one or two caveats. (One of them being that an XP/2000 system gaining access to a Vista/7-formatted NTFS volume will delete the system restore points on that volume)
There is no NTFS (v6.1). v6.1 refers to the Windows 7 version of NTFS.sys.
The NTFS file system (v3.1) remained same across Win XP_Vista_Win 7. Some of the changes visible in Windows 7 are the implementation of file permissions a little different to Windows XP.
The next generation of file system by Microsoft "WinFS" (based on relational databases) which was supposed to be included in "Cairo" built of windows to be released after Vista.
Due to the inherent problems in Vista, an interim version of windows 7 (v6.1) was released. The Cairo project was shelved and with it the WinFS, though research continued on WinFS. We have to wait and see whether a derivative of WinFS will find its way in Windows 8.
