Move taskbar icon into "Show hidden icons"?

I have several active program icons on my taskbar that are not being regularly used and would like to move them into the "show hidden icon" area. Is this possible? BTW, I've followed some instructions using the control panel, but they seem to deal with icons that are already in the systray. Also, I know that when the taskbar is full, I can move these "unwanted" icons into the second layer of the taskbar, but I would rather hide them.
