I just had a few questions for all of you... Not sure where to put it, if its in the wrong place, I apologize.
1. Can it cause damage, or faster wear and tear to a hard drive to frequently install, and uninstall things?
2. Will it cause any damage stopping a defragment process multiple times during the defrag?
3. Something is eating up all of my processor speed. I have searched, and have done everything I can think of. Does anyone know what the problem might be?
1. No you can not wear down a HDD by installing and uninstalling programs on it.
2. No. You can stop the defrag process any number of times. But make sure you complete it. Otherwise the HDD remains defragged and the system becomes slow.
3. Open Task Manager by right clicking on taskbar in the bottom of the screen and select Start Task Manager. Go to Processes tab. Click on the CPU heading to sort the processes according to the CPU usage. Check which process is taking more percentage of CPU (forget the System Idle Process - This process indicates the CPU just idling doing nothing). Read the Description for this process. You will have an idea now which was the culprit. Once you identify the culprit, you can search for a solution or post back on this forum... We need to know the culprit process to help you...
I am not on my computer at the moment, but the main thing that is sucking my processing power, is scvhost or whatever it is called. I can't cancel that. But my PC was working perfectly like a month ago, than it started going downhill.
I ran virus scans, fixed registry errors, defragged, and knocked otu as many things as I could, and its still running slowly. I have a GateWay laptop, nv51b15u Series I think. If you want to know my stats. I am trying to run Rift, and on the absolute lowest settings, I manage 10 frames per second. With System Requirements Lab, I pass on everything but CPU, which should not cause this big of a problem.
I forgot to tell that I change the mode just in BIOS after installing xp, and now I dont need xp, just need a fresh win 7 but Im afraid to format due to loss of data in other partitions?!
