Why sometime Open with dialog not set the default applicataion?

Here my friends Pc has a problem. He has to go in Default Programs to set the default application for certain extension. There is the check-box for the "Always open the program with this application" is not enable.
So how can he enable it for him on his PC for the extension he has. As in this image the check-box area is get grayed which means it is not enabled.
After associating his MP3 files with MPlayer using the Open with/Choose default program... dialogue he can no longer change that association using said dialogue, the Always use this [...] Checkbox is henceforth always greyed out (Control Panel > Default Programs > Associate a file type or protocol with a program does not let him change it either, it seems to just use the same dialogue anyway).

    Hello Avirk,

Is he having this issue with all file extensions or just the .mp3 one?

For .mp3, see if he may be able to go into Default Programs, select Windows Media Player, and either set WMP to be the default for all of it's defauts (file associations) or select to choose defaults for WMP to check the .mp3 box.
If that doesn't help, then the tutorial below will allow him to restore the default associations for specific file extensions.
    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

    Avirk,

See if doing step 2 in OPTION TWO in the tutorial below will ungray the Always use the selected program to open this kind of file option afterwards.

Open With - Add or Remove "Always use selected program"
