    System tasks, services, etc.

    Is there a way to stop selected applications or services from starting up with Windows? Is there a list of such items that can be safely disabled? Thank you.

    KathleenR, First question?

    Why do you want to not run specific services? Or applications.

    You must be carefull in stopping some services as your computer will not boot or stop working.

    There are websites that specialize in services settings.
    One that I used was called blackviper that had a listing of all the services
    and which ones could be turned off and such.

    I gues my second question? again, what is your reasoning for wanting to
    stop services and applications from running?

    You can stop them using this program
    Autoruns for Windows
    CodeStuff :: Starter
    (be careful, you might accidentally disable something important)

    Here is a cloud-base software, which has users` rating on programs and services, which helps you to determine what to disable and what to keep.

    Thank you Rich. I want to speed up this laptop. I have used Blackviper on my desktop but that is on the blink now so I couldn't access it to find the name of the list.
