Ok, i tried recovering twice with two different discs. The first time took 24 hours to finish but still not fixed the problem. The second time with different discs went for 48hours before i canceled it. Do i have to reinstall windows? How do i reinstall it with no win7 disc? The product key underneath the laptop is faded, how do i find out what it is? Thanks

Your issue sounds more like a hardware issue than an issue with the OS. What brand hard drive do you have? I'd look up the support website for it and download/burn a hard drive utility cd to run some tests on it. It doesn't sound very healthy at this point if it takes that long to perform a reinstall.

The BIOS should give you the model number, which you can Google for what drive it is.

There should be a bootable iso that you burn to disc and then boot from cd.

    Here:
WD Support / Downloads / SATA & SAS / WD Caviar Blue / SE / SE16 (SATA II)

Did the test on my hard drive, error 0225. (Error count reached a threshold value. There are too many errors detected on this drive to be repaired. Replace the drive.) Thanks for your help, much appreciated.

That's what I figured. If the hard drive is still under warranty, contact the manufacturer to replace it. If not, there are tons of options available to replace it (although more expensive now since the artificial inflation from the Thailand flooding).

Added Possibility to Correct this error.

Hello! I've been utilizing this great group for several year now and thought it time to join since I received so much good information on fixing issues from this forum. Now it's my turn to share what I've learned and I hope it helps someone out there finding themselves facing the same issue with this possibly simple, quick fix.

This error does concern the HDD or SDD these days from all the research I've done.

My system just crapped out on me after a successful bootup this morning a few hours ago. It was working fine and when I went to use it I saw the dreaded error msg.

I have experienced a lot of weird behaviour over the years building & troubleshooting boxes and system error, PS's are the most frustrating because they cause all kinds of weird behaviour with other components, thankfully that wasn't my issue with this error.

I've learned that with ANYTHING using cabling there can be intermittent issues due to everything from punctured cables to connection oxidation causing poor contacts, so the first thing I did knowing my PS was good, brand new with ample power to spare was check the cabling. Generally once a year I clean out my boxes and "reseat" everything except the CPU. If installed properly the first time, you should never have to touch that component again.

Reseating all the drive power and SATA cables(on both ends) solved my bootup issue. I did a drive check after rebooting and the drive was clean, it's practically brand new actually with only a few marked out sectors which is normal on these new large TB drives. Try this quick check 1st before going down the road of HDD bootup heartaches. Hope it helps!
