I was baiting my local PC World apple rep today, letting him give me his sales pitch, trying to tell me why I should move to mac, and how the grass was greener...
So I told him that in fairness, unless I can get what I need to run on it it wasn't much point -
"Oh, but 3d cad works fine in parallels" he said,
"er... no". I said, "CATIA will hit limits running within parallels, and besides, bootcamp still needs drivers
loaded in and can't recognize raid, and also there's 2500 really good reasons why I won't buy a mac pro over 700 reasons to buy the components to get a Pro-beater built."
"Oh, but I prefer to buy new hardware with a service pack update and know it just works "- he said...
"Then you're stupid" I said.
2What's a 2FX?" I asked.. "'er.. dunno" he said
It was my first mac - and i've owned 3 imacs 2 G4 Powermac's, a powerbook G4 and a mac mini.
He was a bit surprised.
He told me then, that it was cheaper for an enterprise to purchase powermacs for the logevity of the machinery. But apple might only discount a volume purchase of 800 units by 500 pounds per unit, Lenovo let us have their top spec workstation for 500 pounds each. That's a saving of 2K per box, which over 800 users is ... well do the math.
"You kow what I still like about Mac OS I said",... the whole aesthetic aside of course, which in my opinion is really good; is the way that in windows, all my card reader's ports are visible in 'computer'
I really liked the way mac OS only shows the devices that are actually mounted. I really like the way I put a MMC card in the slot and it mounts on the desktop rather than having all six ports visible as media drives on my explorer window. Oh and cover flow folder view - I like that as well, and the fan option to view the folder contents when you pin a folder to the dock.
"... WHAT... and that's it?" he asked...
Yep. Other than that, I'm more than happy with 7.
"Yea, but the mac OS is visually better like you've just said, that's got to make your productivity better?"... he said.
"Sure, and it may well do,." I said, "but not 1K plus for the privilege it isn't. Why don't they bring back the cube, so I can drop my own gpu into it?"
"Ahh yes, well - that would take sales from the mac Pro, and besides, you'd have driver
conflicts - a really common windows problem - which is why you always have blue screens." - he said.
"How much of what apple have told you, do you really believe?" I asked.
he felt the need to see another customer after that !?! SO...
Dear Microsoft, for SP1, please could I have an option that allows me to se just volumes and media that's mounted either in the explorer window or my desktop, and perhaps some nice options to view folder contents other than AERO flip.
Also would it be possible to have a tool like disc Utility that allows you to not only burn ISO,s but make them, and mount and eject them as part of the OS, and if possible please just buy a copy of ilife and reverse engineer something similar for Windows 7 as the iLife suite (iphoto and iMovie specifically) is still so very very good.
Then i really don't need to look at macs again and wish - if only.
As for everything else... well it just works
PS - The chap in the PC World apple section is apparently employed by apple and hence not a PCW employee. He also let on that the profit margin on a mac is still around the 70% mark.
Please go to your local PC World and question them, as I fould it gave me great amusement, especially after a while when he realised that I knew more about his products than he did
