    Need Help with Virus on Windows XP SP2


    Hello, I have a Compaq sr1575cl running Windows XP SP2. Microsft Security Essentials detected TrojanOS/Alureon.E on my computer. When I try to remove it, it says "Error Encountered". Then a message pops up "Security Essentials couldn't apply the action(s) you selected." It says the Item is located in: boot:\\.\PHYSICALDRIVE0\Partion2 (Type 17). I have attached a screen shot of it. I have tried recovering from the recovery partition twice and it's still there. No other anti-virus software is detecting it. Is there really a virus or is it a false detection? How do I remove it if it is indeed a virus? Please help.

    I have to ask, why are you still on XP SP2 when SP3 has been out since April 2008? That's probably why you got infected in the first place.

    IMO, recovery partitions are a waste of HDD space. Deleting the partition and using the extra space for whatever you want is a much better way to go. I'd recommend doing that, unless you absolutely NEED the recovery partition for whatever reason (no XP installation CD, etc), to see if your problem still lingers. If it does, try scanning with MalwareBytes if you haven't already, then for the love of all that's holy, update that machine.

    When I install SP3 through Windows Update, my computer no longer will boot, so I have to go into safe mode and uninstall SP3. I used the recovery partition because the cd drive does not eject and I don't have a windows xp installation disc. I scanned twice with Malwarebytes and it didn't find anything

    Hmmm, that's odd. Have you tried downloading the full EXE and installing from that?
