Cannot remove a Recent Places desktop icon

Running Windows 7 I somehow ended up with a "Recent Places" link and icon on my desktop. I can't move it to the trash or delete it.

How can I remove the "Recent Places" icon from my desktop?

    One more thanks!

Just found this forum trying to solve this specific problem. Looks very useful! The MSFN forum has become very little help, at least to me.

Remove Recent Place from Desktop Another Solution

I just ran into this annoying problem as well. I have a clean desktop (icon free) and like it this way. If you do to, this solution should work for you.

Go into control panel, appearance and personalization, personalization. Click on change desktop icons on the left. Mine were all unchecked, so I turned them all back on and hit apply. It made the recent place icon disappear. I then unchecked all the boxes again and hit apply. Voila! Clean desktop again.

I had the same problem, but wanted to completely remove the recent places icon and link so that my activities could not be tracked...

I went to c:\users\<username> and deleted the links folder, and that did the job permanently :)
