Windows 7: Asus Laptop won't display higher than 1024x768

I just bought the Asus K53U laptop and when I first opened it up it had what I presumed to be the correct display resolution set at 1368x766, but after I updated everything and downloaded AVG antivirus I can only get 1024x768 and now everything is stretched on the widescreen.

The laptop has a AMD Radeon E-450 processor and am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. I don't know how to find out what kind of graphics card I have, but when I go to display settings all I see is Standard VGA Graphics Adaptor.

Any help on how to get my display to show its max resolution of 1368x766?

You could try rolling back the graphics display adaptor driver via Task Manager. Right-click > Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver.

Or download the latest driver from asus website, may help

Standard VGA driver is a placeholder driver given by installer when it doesn't have a newer driver (yet). It may be updated via optional Windows Updates so check there first.

If you had better resolution before then you might get it back by following joodoo's idea of rolling back the driver on Driver tab of the installed device in Device Manager.

If not you want the latest driver on the Asus's Support Downloads webpage for your model, as suggested.

As to what might have changed it, the first suspect would be AVG bloatware. No one here recommends AVG since it bloated up a few years back and causes problems. Use Microsoft Security Essentials or Avast 6 for best performance with the Windows 7 firewall.

Thanks for the replies and help. Will try some of these for when I get home after work and keep it updated if I get a solution to the problem. Problems like these are frustrating. I'm also going to uninstall my AVG and get the free McAfee Security from At&t and see if that works better.

The only AV worse than AVG is MucAfee which is the absolute worst causing problems we deal with here at least weekly. It only works well when it's uninstalled.

Why avoid the AV's which nearly everyone here recommends? And they're free!

Many of us use Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes to successfully keep our computers virus-free.

I never knew about those. How about Webroot? I have a free year coming to me.
