    Freezing While Resuming from Hibernation

This problem started occurring around the 23rd. When I resume from hibernation, during the Resuming Windows screen, the PC will freeze. When I turn it off and then tell it to continue resuming, it'll resume fine. Does anyone know what caused it to do this in the first place? I have a feeling it was because of one of the programs I installed around the 23rd (either a heavily modded version of Final Fantasy VII or Final Fantasy VIII), but I want to know if it could be something else since I don't want to uninstall these programs.

EDIT: This is for anyone that finds this in the future. I listed this as solved a while ago even though it wasn't technically solved. I just didn't bother with it anymore since updating the drivers didn't do as much good as I originally thought. However, I updated the BIOS and the problem is gone, so the problem is actually solved now.

There are several ways to find what the problem is. The best is to go into event viewer (type eventvwr in search). Event viewer (local) and look for errors listed in the last day, week, etc. Then go to the windows log>application tab. Finally the windows Logs>system tabs.

You want to look for all errors (they have red in the left column ).

When you find them you want to look for critical errors that say app hang, app crash, or anything that relates to the problem.

When you find them please note the event ID, and the source codes and tell us what they are.

I looked in there, but I didn't find any Application Hang/Crash errors that looked suspicious. Then again, I wasn't quite sure what to look for in the Event Viewer. It looked pretty confusing.

I also noticed something about the freezing issue. It apparently only happens when I have applications open while resuming from hibernation. Today, I hibernated my computer three times: once after I closed all apps, another time with MS Word 2007 open, and the third time with Firefox 8 open. My computer only resumed correctly when I closed all apps before hibernating.

THese issues often are due to Display driver issues. Check optional Windows Updates for newer drivers, then the SUpport Downloads webpage for your computer or Display device model.

Try System Restore to a point before the problem began.

    Work through these troubleshooting steps.

If all else fails, run a trace with this tool used by the Pro's which will resolve it: Gathering a Startup, Shutdown, Sleep, Hibernate, or Reboot Trace - Windows 7 Forums

A system restore didn't work. When I looked in the troubleshooting steps, it mentioned going into the Administrative Events section of the Event Viewer. I don't know which error is causing the freezing issues, but there are a bunch that repeat themselves. I'll list the sources and Event IDs:

    Source: Dhcp-Client
    Event ID: 1001

    Source: Microsoft Antimalware
    Event ID: 2004

    Source: Kernel-EventTracing
    Event ID: 3

    Source: ATIeRecord
    Event ID: 16398
This one repeats a lot. The error has been occurring since I got my laptop, although I didn't find out until I first looked into the Event Viewer.

    Source: DistributedCOM
    Event ID: 10010

The troubleshooting steps also mentioned looking at the Performance issues in the Advanced Tools section of the Performance Information and Tools section of the Control Panel. One of the issues says that an AMD driver is causing Windows to resume slowly (name is AMD multi-vendor Miniport Driver, filename is atikmpag.sys, device is AMD Radeon HD 6470M, time taken is 0.2 seconds). I've checked the Dell and AMD websites and none of the downloads seem to help. The driver on the Dell website is the same version as the one I already have. On the AMD website, when I click on Support & Drivers, I enter Notebook Graphics for the Component Category, Radeon HD Series for the Product Line, Radeon HD 6xxxM Series for the Product Model, and then Windows 7 - 64 Bit for the Operating System. The results page gives me a Catalyst Software Suite that isn't compatible with my computer, but I don't know what other drivers would match my graphics card. I even tried the Driver Autodetect option, but the driver that it gave me still refused to install due to incompatibility issues.

Judging by the Perfomance issue that I'm getting, I'm fairly sure that my AMD driver is causing this freezing issue (although I don't know why it's happening now. It's been fine until November 23). However, none of the updated drivers I download will install due to incompatibility issues. Does anyone know a way around this?

I also tried to do a Hibernation trace when the drivers failed, but at the end of the instructions that were posted, there are only sections regarding the creation of a BOOT trace, Shutdown trace, and REBOOT trace. For hibernation errors, which trace should I create?

Cluberti is our expert on running a trace to ask directly about any questions and help with analysis.

Since we don't have the text of the AMD/ATI errors I can only work from experience and what I would do is uninstall Catalyst Software if you have it - everything except the driver - which can solve some issues. Then uncheck any listings (as well as everything else but your AV) in msconfig>Startup and msconfig>Services after hiding all MS services. Nothing is running then except the driver. Make sure you have the latest from optional Windows Updates, as well.

If it helps, I took screenshots of the errors I'm getting in the Event Viewer. Here they are:

Here's a picture of the warning I'm getting in the Advanced Tools window:

Also, when I uninstall ATI's software, I'm given a list of five applications to uninstall. Here's a picture:

Just to be sure (I don't want to permanently screw up something), I'm supposed to check everything except the ATI Display Driver, right? Also, if you're wondering, in the Programs and Features section of the Control Panel, the only ATI/AMD application that's related to the display drivers is the ATI Catalyst Install Manager.

Why do you have ATI software when your System Specs say you have Nvidia Graphics card? Is this another computer?

Catalyst Install Manager should be uninstalled, along with everything except Display Driver.

Make sure you have the latest display driver from optional Windows Updates or the devices' Support Downloads webpage.

If this problem is only since November 23, have you attempted to System Restore to before that date? If not I'd try that first.

Oh, my specs are for my home computer, not my college laptop. I've also attempted a System Restore, but it didn't help. I might try it one more time though before uninstalling the ATI stuff.

System Restore didn't help (I even went back as far as September) and neither did uninstalling everything except the driver. However, repairing the installation of the ATI Catalyst Install Manager seemed to work. After doing that, I resumed from hibernation with an IE window open and had no problems. I don't know if this will stay solved, but for the time being, everything appears to be ok. Thanks for your help in figuring out that it was a display driver issue.
