You can use the upgrade discs with both Vista AND
XP. MS has even said at times that Windows 2000 will work, too.
You simply can't upgrade from XP and optionally have your settings, programs, and files carry over -- it will force a fresh install.
The family packs aren't expected until this fall, and they won't be permanently available. Though they've announced their existence and pricing, I haven't seen anyplace doing pre-orders for those just yet. They probably don't want to cut into those who want to pay full price for pre-orders now.
Anyway, they *will* be out. $150 for a 3-pack of Home Premium upgrades, and they *will* work coming from a genuine copy of XP, too. http://www.tomshardware.com/news/windows-family-pack-home-premium,8384.html
