    DVD drive "thinks" it's a CD-Drive

For some reason, my DVD drive ( Slimtype DVD A DS8A1H ATA Device) "thinks" it is a CD-ROM Drive. I have a feeling that a virus may have done this, but I've have scanned the system using Norton. So far I have not gotten any data back confirming my suspicions.

I have tried to uninstall and reinstall the DVD driver through device manager, but that did not work. And In Disk Management, for some reason, My DVD Drive is labeled as CD-ROM 5 and My VirtualClone Drive is labeled as CD-ROM 2, but there isn't a CD-ROM 0, 1, 3, or 4.

ANd If not a virus, then I think the following programs I installed immediately before this problem occured have something to do with the software:
    TweakNow Powerpack 2010
    TuneUp Utilities 2011
    WinAmp Pro
    Scan Spyware
    Virus Effect Remover
    Alcohol120% (but I uninstalled it)

    Thank You

Is it reading DVDs still? If so...I wouldn't worry about it.

Restart the computer and see if it fixes itself.

Ive had by BluRay Drive do that once or twice.
Never figured out what actually causes it, and it is rare but ..

It would just show as a CDROM drive.

If I put a BluRay or DVD in it, it reads it and then shows properly as a BDROM after that.

So just try sticking a disc in there, let it read it, then eject it.

I have a BluRay drive which is listed as CD-ROM with DVD-R underneath that. That is normal. Alcohol 120% maybe left behind some settings it didn't uninstall.
I would uninstall the following too:
    TweakNow Powerpack 2010
    Scan Spyware
    Virus Effect Remover
TuneUp has a setting for monitoring CD drives, make sure it is enabled.

Also run this tutorial SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker, it may take 3 times until you get no integrity violations. Reboot between each one.

I forgot to mention that Ialso installed Ashampoo WinOptimizer.
Also, could you give me the path for the CD monitoring option on TuneUp Utilities?

I did as you said and unistallef Tweak Powerpack,Virus Effect Remover, and Scan Spyware.
I also uninstalled a program called Virtual Clone Drive 5 because I thought it might be contributing to the problem, but that did not work.

And if you are right, and Alcohol 120% did leave some bits after I uninstalled it, where should I look?

This is an age old Windows glitch...
On most PC's the drive will report itself according to the last type of media it read/wrote to...

Not to worry if all works well.

I tried waiting and nothing is working. I tried the sfc/scannow command 5 times, rebooting, between every interval and nothing is still working. In fact, I believe the situation is worse: my USBs think that they are CD Drives and now I can't write to ANY Disc Media and can only read CDs. I tried some other forums and I found Device Cleaner, but that did not work. Do you have any other suggestions?

Have you checked your DVD drive has the latest firmware flashed to it?

    It's under System control/Drives/Autoplay.
Did the SFC scan have no violations shown.
In my sig is a link for Revo Uninstaller, download it and run it to see if it picks up any Alcohol.
Please DON'T download or use any other optimizers, you'll make the problem worse. Ask, someone will try to help out.

Where would I get firmware for my DVD Drive (for free and without any torrents involved)?
