DDR2 RAM can be replaced with DDR3 as they both have the same
pin configuration, however this doesn't mean that your machine
will neccesarily run faster due to the fact that it will rely
on the serial bus width of your motherboard (I think! :) )

Sorry I was pulling that comment off the top of my head.
Pretty sure it's front side bus which will determine the ammount
of memory a system can handle (or should I say address)

Run Crucial's memory scanner, which will advise on the best RAM configuration for your computer.

DDR2 and DDR3, whilst based on the same technology, are not interchangeable due to the different notching and voltage requirements between the two types.

Another poster has already responded correctly to this, but to amplify:

DDR3 will NOT fit in a DDR2 slot. They have the same number of pins, but they are notched differently.

There are electrical differences, which is why they are made mechanically incompatible.

Look at this picture. It's DDR1,DDR2 and DDR3 dimms.

You can't mount them. DDR1 can be mounted just on DDR1, DDR2 just on DDR2, and DDR3 just on DDR3 slot.
    They are different.
