Not sure if laptop I'm repairing is using Windows 7 x64 or 32...
It's a Dell Inspiron 1564 with an Intel i3 CPU. On the back it says Windows 7 Premium Home OA. I've Googled and the specs I've found suggest that it's 64 bit Windows but I thought it would've been labelled as such on the back? It doesn't boot up into Windows due to errors on the hard-drive and I'm using chkdsk in an attempt to repair it but I'm using a Windows 7 32 bit installation cd, not the 64 bit one. Will this make any difference to chkdsk?

You'll need the correct bit-version installer or Repair CD to run System Recovery Options
if it will not boot from the F8 Advanced Boot Tools menu.
I'd try also running Dell Diagnostics from boot.
Use the Repair console Command Line to run Disk Check and boot the HD maker's HD Diagnostic extended CD scan to attempt to repair HD.
You can copy out your files using Win7 DVD, Repair CD or F8 Repair console using this method: Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console
Next you can try running the Factory Recovery from boot: Dell Restoring Your Computer´s Software to the Factory Settings
Or you can use a Win7 installation DVD to clean reinstall following these steps to get a perfect Factory OEM Clean Reinstall: Reinstalling Windows 7
