Burning a new CD--how to tell if it's full

When I'm adding files to burn to a CD, how do I tell when the CD is full and won't hold any more? My program on my old computer had a little line at the bottom, and each time I added one it would fill up more and more till the tip of it started to turn yellow if I had too much on.

I don't know how to tell when to quit.

It sounds like you might be using the included burner. I would strongly suggest using some other app, such as CDBurnerXP or ImgBurn.

The program you're thinking of might have been Nero
You can get a free trial of nero at their website

I find the GUI of ImgBurn extremely user unfriendly although it is an excellent free program. I would any day prefer Burnaware Free which is very user friendly.

It's just the CD burning program that comes with Windows 7. Yes, the program I was using on my last computer was Nero, and that little gauge sure comes in handy. Thought there might be something like that with this program, but I guess not. Adding all the file sizes on the calculator works, though laborious. But it does seem to work well other than that, and other than a few Memorex CDs it can't recognize as being blanks.

Thank you for all your suggestions!
