Solved black desktop icons - rebuilding icon cache doesn't help permanently

It worked-but only till next reboot ! Desktop icons are gone but still can open
app.Recreating from exe file fails.

I tryed safe mode boot than normal-icons get restored,but after reboot same old story.

Please help me find a permanent solution.

Could you post a screenshot of these icons to see if anything may standout as a cause?

Kolagen,

I don't see anything wrong with the icons. When you say gone, do you mean that the icons are no longer there, or that they are incorrect?

Could you post a screenshot of them when they are incorrect/gone to compare them to see what may be wrong?

Sorry for misunderstending.

Well icons are now OK but after reboot they are gone.Have a look.

No problem Kolagen,

Do the icons reappear if you refresh (F5) the desktop?

If not, then you might see if running a sfc /scannow command to see if may be able to find and fix any bad system files that may be responsible.

If the icons are still doing this afterwards, then you could do a system restore using a restore point dated before this started to hopefully fix this.

Hello Brink

So far nothing seems to work as permanent solution.One more thing,when i change
folder options to ¨show hidden folders¨and hit ¨OK¨icons are visible for a fraction
of the second.

Constant rebooting are nerve wrecking.

If it turns out to be a refreshing issue, then you might see uninstall and reinstalling your video drivers may help, or installing the latest version.

It seems that my video drivers are up to date so reinstalling looks like only option for
now.

Thanx again for your advise and time.

I just noticed that after rebuilding of Icon Cashe there is no IconCashe.db in hidden folder.
It's really puzzling me.

Kolagen,

Did you restart the computer after rebuilding the icon cache. It may take a tiny bit, but the IconCache.db file should be recreated automatically by Windows 7 the next time it loads any icons.

Brink do you mean that I should restart twice?

Computer restarts by default after running bat script.
IconCashe.db must be there but it's not.

No. Only the first restart is required. Give it a bit to see if it returns. It should.

It's geting really weird ! This morning before rebuilding Icon Cashe i looked for IconCashe.db.
I found that it was created last night on logof,and it is without .db extension.
I renamed it to IconCashe.db and restarted-nothing happened.

When i opened hidden folder there it was another IconCashe along with old renamed one.
So i started bat script, icons are restored on desktop but there is no new IconCashe.db ,just the old one ?

Is there any solution for this?

Kolagen,

It sounds like you may not have your known file extenstions set to show. If set to be hidden, then that would be why you are not seeing the .db file extension.

I changed option to ¨show¨but only result i got is old file named IconCahe.db.db.

Old problem still remain.

Unless you have a different language version of Windows 7 installed, you are misspelling IconCache.db (correct) with IconCashe.db (incorrect). It will not work if misspelled in Windows Explorer at the hidden location below.

C:\Users\User-Name\AppData\Local\IconCache.db

As for the desktop icons, you never confirmed if refreshing (F5) the desktop had them display afterwards or not.

I misspelled only in my post ,otherwise they are named OK.
