    Welcome to SF, MakaPaka.

Try creating this antivirus cd on another computer, then boot your computer with this cd to search for viruses.

Being you can't get to the welcome screen or safe mode, I suggested the virus scan. It's 88MB for a CD, and is in the format of an .iso image. You will have to burn the iso image to the cd. You can use Imgburn to do this:

Yes. Of course, it may not find all infected files, but at this point we just want to get you to boot up again.

    Welcome back, Lemur.

If AVG Rescue disk cleans up infection, does it have a specific tool to repair Startup if Win7 will not start? How does it run? I see it has file rescue Explorer and Reg editor.

Sometimes damage from infection requires Startup Repair run repeatedly. Even though SFC and Disk Check are automated in Startup Repair they sometimes also need to be run manually from the System Recovery Options Command Line: SFC -SCANNOW Run in Command Prompt at Boot.

We have good results with Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper.

Hi Greg! Great to be back. Academic studies took their toll, but now I'm down to my thesis.

I agree with you. Ideally you would want to run this from within the OS. And next from a rescue CD. If it's a corrupted file, then sfc is the way to go. But if it's a virus, sfc won't help. So either way is appropriate. I had never heard of the standalone sweeper before. Will this remove viruses and repair startup? If so, I really need to investigate it.

MS Standalone only scans for infection. It works quite well. I wish they'd merge it with System Recovery Options but for now those need to be run from disk or F8 Advanced Boot Options.
