WTF? Server 2008 R2 on Technet question So I just got this email from MS, and this is what really stood out to me: Quote: We are virtually on the eve of releasing Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 and our main concern at this point is your readiness and awareness of all the new goodness that accompanies those products. Windows Server 2008 R2 evaluation bits are set for availability on Friday, August 14, a week earlier than previously reported. On Friday, check out the Windows Server TechCenter on TechNet for info on how and where to download the 180-day evaluation bits. So, am I to take this to mean that any Server 2008 R2 build that I download from Technet is timebombed? I'm pretty sure it says right there on the subscription page that one of the benefits to Technet is that all software is not timebombed. Am I reading this wrong, or what? | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Model #: BRMD10926 OS Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1 RC CPU Core i5-750 2.66Ghz OC'd to 3.49 Motherboard Gigabyte H55M-USB3 Memory 8GB Crucial Ballistix DDR3 1600 with thermal monitor Graphics Card Geforce GTS 250 512MB HDMI Sound Card On Board Realtek HD Monitor(s) Displays Acer X223HQ Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Keyboard Gear Heads 2.4 Ghz wireless Mouse Gear Heads 2.4 Ghz wireless PSU Rosewill 700W Case Thermaltake V9 Black Edition Cooling Corsair H50 Hard Drives Samsung Spinpoint 7200 1TB

Looks like we have a breach of contract here? It would seem that it is indeed going to be timebombed...I would call Microsoft and ask them | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Compal JFT02 (Custom Build Laptop) OS Windows 7 Home Premium x64 - Mac OS X 10.6.4 x64 CPU Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 2.5 GHz Motherboard JFT02 Memory 4GB Kingston DDR2-800 Graphics Card NVIDIA Geforce 8600M GT (512MB Model) Sound Card Realtek HD Audio Monitor(s) Displays WUXGA Standard Laptop Display Screen Resolution 1680*1050 Keyboard Standard Laptop 105 Key-Keyboard Mouse Synaptics Touchpad PSU Standard Laptop Power Supply Case Standard Laptop Case Cooling Standard Laptop Cooling Hard Drives Toshiba 320GB 5400RPM Laptop HD Internet Speed Verizion Online DSL 3360/864 kbs (dl/up) |

No, not timebombed. There are (and have been for some time) two separate Server 2008 downloads: one from TechNet (or MSDN) subscriptions that are not timebombed, and one from regular TechNet (no sub needed) that are 180-day evals. It stands to reason that this arrangement for 2008 will apply for 2008 R2 as well, and this e-mail is almost certianly about the latter, not the former. | My System Specs | | |
