Windows 7: Upgrade media....Additional info for Winxp users.

Upgrade media....Additional info for Winxp users.

There has been great discussions as to how the 'Upgrade Media' will work for those users that have a genuine previous operating system.

It seems the Win 7 installer is slightly different from the Vista installer in that it has to see an ACTIVATED copy of xp. This rules out the 'Double Install' that worked with Vista.

From what I have gathered, this is how it will work for XP.

First Win 7 install.

Boot to the XP desktop. ( Must be legal and activated, WGA, etc,etc )
Insert Win 7 Upgrade Media.
Run setup and select custom install.
Activate online.

Now the Win 7 key will in some way cripple the XP key.
This is an inconvenience as if you ever need to re install Win 7 onto a fresh empty drive one needs to go through some extra hoops.

Re install at a later date to a formatted new drive.

Install XP and Activate. This will require a phone call to MS. You will have to explain your situation. If you are approved, they will activate your XP.
Then, and only then, can you re install Win 7.

This last key to the puzzle was supplied by Darin Smith from MS .

" I just talked to the person that does allot of the training for your support staff.

The way he explained it to me is: After the first time you upgrade XP to Windows 7, any time you need to reinstall Windows 7, you will install XP (using the XP Product Key) The XP key will still be valid, but the key will only be able to be Activated by Phone (not over the Internet). I believe that 'No Internet Activation' part is what those 'MS store' people were refering to.

My apologize for my previous statment when I said you would be able to Activate XP over the Internet. That was incorrect. Once you upgraded the first time, any future Activations will only be able to be done by Phone."

I am certainly not happy with all the above but at least it now gives us the information that many of us were looking for. How will the honest user be treated on the call to MS for the activation??
