folders with the up arrow, -location is not available

I'm not getting something what is the point of this? and I can't find any way to stop it or change the behavior
this is nothing to do with permissions it is the default MyDocuments as far as I can tell.
see attached pic. the only thing this does is force me to do more scrolling to get to the 'real' folders so I can access the content.

If you right click on My Music, and left click on properties, what path does it show? Just to make sure, is the problem you have unwanted shortcuts, or the shortcuts do not go to the correct folder?

the path to the 'fake' folder is a unc network path:
    \\mypcname\Users\myAcctId\Documents\My Music
so maybe i'm just getting old and ornery the problem is I have 3 objects in the 'my documents' folder that just sit there and take up space.
they seem to have something to do with a 'library'
if I create a new library there doesn't seem to be a 'fake' folder associated with it by default.
I just deleted one of the fake folders and it doesn't seem to have any affect on the library it was evidently associated with.
it all seems weird and pointless
