    Should I assume that you can still view PDF's in Adobe Reader or must you use PDF Exchange as well? Have you tried this? The specifications don't mention doing thumbnail generation.

    At this point I have loaded W7 RTM on 10 machines (x86 and x64). All the x64 machines exhibit PDF thumbnail issues that come and go. ..... right now I am showing 100% of the PDF thumbs on my desktop . . . tomorrow it could be a different story....

    If I recall correctly, when installing the viewer with acrobat reader already installed there is an option to make the Xchange Viewer the default for viewing PDF files.

    If you decline this offer then at least in theory the thumbnails will be handled by xchange whilst reading is handled by Acrobat Reader.

    This is not proven but as long as the Xchange reader is loaded second, it should work

    The other thing to watch is of course an auto upgrade of Acrobat may need the Xchange viewer to be repaired

    Also with your particular mix of x86 & x64 does this happen on shared data files, what can happen is the x86 reader will create thumbnails which remain until the x64 attempts to create them and fails

    Ah..... vindication!! I am NOT nuts.

    No, it's not my PC or some rogue application. Windows is still broken.....

    BUT, here is the FIX!! Works perfectly in W7 X64 !!!

    Fixes for 64-bit Adobe Reader preview handler and thumbnails

    This guy knows his stuff!!! This program should be run on every X64 installation!

    I have the same problem. The thumbnails are there for a few days and then revert to the adobe icon. I can get them back by using the file open dialog in adobe reader. You don't have to open the file, just access the folder. No idea what is causing it. A permanent fix would be appreciated.

    Fix for erratic thumbs display problem

    Sometimes thumbnails don't show, because the "explorer.exe" process has gone whacko internally.
    To fix this, "kill" the explorer process, then re-run it again:
    ctrl-shift-escape -> processes -> Explorer -> end process
    ctrl-shift-escape -> File -> run -> (type in the word:) explorer -> OK
