    Black desktop icons problem


    Hi Guys,

    Ok, my icons were fine over the last few days....and now suddenly for no reason, they are showing up as black squares instead of the default icons.

    The windows native icons (computer, Network, etc) are displaying fine.

    Anyone know what's causing this?

    Did you change anything like a video driver? Is windows update set to download and auto install? We could help you more if you would fill out your system spevs in the lower left corner of your posts, and tell us if its 32bit or 64, clean install or upgrade

    Yep, seems its the latest video driver (I switched from 32bit colour to 16 and the icons showed again)....weird though...it was working fine over the last few days.

    win7 x64 = 3 day old install btw (and "check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them"

    gonna try a previous version of the display drivers (nvidia 8800)

    Let us know if that doesn't fix it.

    Have just sorted this for friend who had this black/blanked out icons problem on a Windows 7 laptop. I downloaded the "Vista Shortcut Overlay Remover" program from this link...

    and installed it and set the arrow setting to the light arrows one then logged off/on from system and the black/blanked out icons problem was gone. The 'light' arrow setting shows shortcuts with a barely visible blue arrow in the corner which is ideal

My Win 7 has been working flawlessly for the past few days, but this morning after installing some updates(posted), after restarting I have these black boxes on my Desktop...tried clearing the thumbnail cache after Googling the problem but no dice...any ideas???:(
dell studio 1545 win 7 pro 64 bit hi everyone, im wayne from the uk. i have been searching this and other forums for hours trying to find the cause/remedy for randomly appearing black boxes instead of desktop icons after boot up. its 50/50 wether normal icons appear or if black boxes appear....
When I booted the computer this morning, I let check disk run. Now my monitor background is black. The icons are visible and colored properly. I select my own background that is changed every 15 minutes. I used Control Panel and reselected my theme but it didn't work. Any suggestions?
