I would try the Toshiba HD scan so you have a second opinion since Hitachi doesn't seem to want to give one. If it will repair you might be back in business after several passes and a Disk Check.

I've tried downloading the 3 Toshiba Windows Diagnostic Tool files from here. But non of them are 'iso image' files. So I can't use it for a boot disk. I tried adding the application to a data disk, but unsurprisingly, that didn't work.

Ok, I'll have a look for, and use the startup repair from a dvd that you posted.. and see if that makes a difference. Which hopefully it will.

Again thanks for all your help. I appreciate it, I'd be very stuck otherwise.

Work through these steps: Windows 7 fails to boot.
Feel free to ask back any questions to get each step done completely.

If the steps all fail copy out your data per the step given and run HP factory recovery: HP Recover Windows 7 Operating System Using HP Recovery - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

Or you can clean reinstall using this Win7 installation DVD with SP1 ISO, burned to DVD or written to flash stick with Windows 7 USB-DVD Download Tool:
Win7 Home Premium x64 SP1 English Official ISO download

You will need the DVD to do the repairs properly too.
    Great Advice

I downloaded this iso this and burned it to a dvd.

When I tried to boot from it, I just get a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left hand corner. Then after about it minute, I get a message saying: " CDBOOT: Couldn't find BOOTMGR

I could hear the disk spinning in the dvd drive.

I also tried selecting the 'Repair Computer' option.

It went to the blue screen, nothing happened for about 1 minute (I could hear the disk spinning in the dvd drive)

Then I got a pop up asking me to chose my keyboard language, so I selected 'UK' then I clicked next on the wizard... and the nothing happened. The popup wizard disappeared, and I was just left with the blue background image again. (for about 5 minutes)

Looks like I can't even reboot it or anything, I think it really is knackered.

I've tried using the HP Avdance System Diagnostics.

I tried doing an 'hard drive test' from the options, but it failed almost straight away, and came up with this message:

    HP Hard Drive Test

    Testing device 1
    SMART check: PASSED
    Short DST: FAILED

    Failure id: PK5NTO-5LV61E-XDO141-60QR03
    Product id: XD54OEA#ABU
    Hard disk 1

    -----------------------------------------------

    Hard Disk Test: FAILED
Press escape(esc) to go back to the main menu or click on the button below.

I've just accepted I'm not going to recover my files, and I am going to try doing a system recovery and restore the factory image.
If this doesn't work, I'll try buying a new hard drive.

If you can boot the Win7 DVD or Repair CD then you might still be able to copy out your files: Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console

Make sure your ISO is confirmed by size as complete and burned to DVD using MS Download tool or ImgBurn at 4x speed. How to Boot your Computer from a Bootable CD or DVD

A last resort might be to try booting Paragon rescue disk to recover data
which will boot on its own if you are having problems booting the DVD.

That didn't work, I just got this error after about 25% of the factory image restore.

"Recovery manager could not restore your computer using the factory image. Please contact HP for support. Error code 0xe0ef0003"
Is this caused by a faulty hard drive? I'm just wondering, because I don't want to buy a new hard drive, and still not have it work...

I don't know what has happened to my laptop, it's just completely gone... totally out of the blue. Oh well s*** happens I guess.

I was still typing out the post above, before you had replied.

I shall give the three options a try now.

I burned another Windows 7 boot disk, I made sure it was complete by size, and the speed was 4x.

Now it stays on the black screen, with the blinking in cursor in the top left corner for longer, then I get a message saying

"BOOTMGR image is corrupt. The system cannot boot."

I've tried that paragon link, but I can't find no download link... it keeps taking me to Facebook.
