Classpnp problem on Win 7 64bit, even after fresh OS installation.

    Hi

The laptop was initally ok, but I slammed it shut too hard and broke the screen. I replaced the screen and I was then having startup problems on Win 7 and when attempting to login in safe mode it hanged at 'classpnp'. I did some research, but as I wasn't even able to get to a command prompt i decided to carry out a disc clean using DISKPART and re-installed the OS, only this time I firstly installed XP and then Win 7 for a dual boot system. I fully formatted the HDD removing all original partitions (including the recovery partition, and I do not have recovery discs)

It worked ok for a few hours and then the Win 7 OS started slowing down badly. XP boots fine, but i am now again unable to start Win 7. Startup repair does not work also. I was not able to install my drivers. Like I say, XP is fine.

My laptop is an Asus X5DIJ 4GM RAM/Intel Pentium Dual Processor 250GB HDD

    Many thanks in advance.

If you don't have a recovery disk, how did you reinstall Win7 and/or XP?

Is the Win7 disc a genuine copy as well or is it something that was torrented/downloaded?

No it's not a genuine 7 disc :-( (Please note I do not use torrents) He used it to re-install on his laptop as his was OEM installed, and thought it would be ok, he's not had any problems with his....

Well, first of all, you can't install an OS on two separate machines and have them validate with MS. So, you'll need to purchase a license to use Win7. Second, not knowing where the disc came from, we can't speculate on what issues it might or might not cause, just as a mechanic can't speculate on what happened to your car when you took it to a different and unknown mechanic.

If XP is working without such issues, I doubt you have a hardware problem on the laptop, but I suppose it's still possible. I'd continue to use XP since that's working fine until you can purchase a valid copy of Win7. If you have problems installing that, we'll be here to help.

Sure, I understand, but I have a valid licence for Win 7 that came with the laptop. the XP is fine. I validated my Win 7 using my COA key from the base of the laptop and it was validated fine. I merely used the 7 disc purely to install the OS, using my Licence key that came with my laptop when I purchsed it. It seems unfair to have to buy another copy of Win 7 when I have the OEM version that came with my laptop, but was lost when the laptop had issues....

Ah, I see. I made an incorrect assumption that because you didn't use a genuine CD that you didn't have a license. I apologize for that. However, we still can't help you out if you haven't used a genuine CD from Microsoft. The good news is that you can easily download a genuine ISO from Digital River, Microsoft's partner in offering Windows 7 ISO's:

Official Windows 7 SP1 ISO from Digital River « My Digital Life

I'd recommend you download the appropriate genuine ISO, burn it to CD, reinstall Win7 and see how things go from there.
