Windows can't access file. May not have permission to access.

    Hello,

I am attempting to access an application.exe file on my desktop. Each time that I click on it the Windows message, "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." pops up. I am the system administrator so this should NOT be a problem but apparently many out there are dealing with this as well. I can delete, move and even copy the file but I cannot run it. There is no option for override with password or grant permission. It just says that I cannot run it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, the system I am running is Windows 7 Ultimate x64.

Hello KyRy, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You might check to see if you can right click on the file, click on Properties, click on Security tab, and make sure that you have Read & execute permission allowed (checked) for your user account or the administrators group.
If not, then you might see if you may be able to install and use the free program Unlocker on the file to have access to it afterwards.

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

Thank you. I have tried and the permissions are all checked except for "special permissions." Could this be the problem? I have Star Unlocker but cannot use it for this problem because it does not even let me have the option of choosing whether or not to override it. Any other suggestions?

    What program is this for?

Will it run if you right click on the .exe file and click on "Run as administrator"?

If not, see if taking ownership of the file using step 2 in Option Two of METHOD TWO in the tutorial below may help.

I already have ownership of the .exe file on the account that I'm using. I use Star Unlocker and when I try and use it here it first says that "No Locking handle found." Then it gives me options to delete, rename, or move the file. Any other suggestions?

No, it gives me the same error message. When I spot my permissions that are allowed the only box unchecked is "special permissions." Could that be the problem?

No, "special permissions" wouldn't be the problem.

    What program is this for?
