I have a customer that I built a new pc for running Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit. He dose vinyl work and his vinyl printer was made to run on Xp. every thing installed perfectly but it has to communicate with the Pc via LPT port. If you look at the com ports it says it is there but the Pc and printer do not see each other in the program there for will not communicate. I know com ports are an old technology but I was wondering is there something you need to do in windows 7 to get com ports to work like flipping a switch in code etc. everything is there and working except for the two communicating so it has to be something small and stupid that I'm missing. Any help would be great thanks.
Hiya pal and welcome to the forums.
Do you mean the "printer port" (lpt) or the "com port" (com1 etc.) there is a difference. Also what make is the plotter eg. Roland Camm etc. ?

It’s seems you confuse Parallel port ( Lpt) and serial one ( com ), it’s a very basic knowledge for a computer tech , what about the drivers, do you install one ?

lol well really not sure he believes the printer is a Vinyl express GRC61 but when your in the program and you hit print it ask you what printer you have and the only one in the list is lynx GRC61 my thinking is that it is a Vinyl express but got bought out by lynx.
Area66 you are correct just had one of those moment LPT was printer port and com was data/internet this whole project is enough to make you want to beat your head against a wall especially after dealing with the tech support for the printer kinda makes your brain go numb lol.
You have some printers using com port, especially the label printer. I'm 51 years old, I see a lot of thing plug on those ports, from train controler to $ 100,000 CNC milling equipment. What about the driver ?

Area66 it is a large vinyl printer it uses the old LPT printer port as far as the drivers im gona say they are in. it is all from Singh warehouse and they use a ubs key to install the software. With the usb key if you do one thing wrong it dose not install the program the program wont work. And the program all works fine its just the pc and printer are not communicating when you try to print.
