Solved Hard drive Letter changed

Hi,
Whilst installing a new USB memory stick somehow One of my hard drive letters has changed from F to D?
Computer running Windows 7 starts up ok but most of my programmes and software were on the F drive and I cannot get WIndows EXplorer to work.
I've tried all the tutorials but cannot access any of the administrative programmes to change settings - just says device not ready.

Had to post this from the iPad!

Any help appreciated

No just C and D. Can access both but cannot rename D to F

Has got something to do with registry settings in the local machine mounted devices - but I can't get into any administrative options to change anything.

Tried reg edit and it won't open

sometimes it takes abit for others to post a answer. i myself don't no where else to go with it right now. (sorry)

Hello Stormstorr,

You might unplug the USB drive, and see if doing a system restore at boot using a restore point (if available) dated before the drive letters changed may be able to undo and fix this for you.

Have everything backed up on external drive but lost all network connections too.

I can't believe that something as simple as a drive changing letters can cause so much trouble!

Did you try doing the system restore at boot instead of in Windows?

Are you able to open a elevated command prompt?

If you could post a screen shot of Disk Managment, it might help us to understand better. Click on Start and type in Disk Management. Click on the link that comes up and it will popup on your screen. Use the Snipping Tool to post a picture of it. Type in your message what the drive letters thet should be. == If I have lost you in my message, let me know.

Fixed!

Started up in safe mode with Command Prompt.

Was able to get into the Diskpart.

Followed 'Brinks' instructions;

The new USB Data stick was assigned the 'F' Drive.

Changed that to 'G' - Changed 'D' to 'F' and rebooted.

All fine now - Thanks ever so much to 'Brink', 'BigMCK' and 'Scrooge.
