Icon Notification Area Locks Computer

No matter how I try to access the Icon Notification Area to customize hidden task bar icons, Win 7 freezes to a great extent. I am running 64 bit Win 7 SP1.

Under these conditions, when I put my pointer onto the task bar it changes into a hand with a pointing index finger. The Icon Notification Area will not show icons and all I get there is an interminable spinning blue circle.

The Task Manager will not correct this condition and I have to close my windows session manually with the power button. It seems something has been corrupted but I am at a loss. I have run chkdsk /f and sfc to no good effect.

I am running some 32 bit programs including MS Office Pro. Any advice will be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Hello Mikey,
I did not experience this problem before but I guess it might be a software-related or bad hardware installation error? Does this error occur in Safe-Mode?

Thank you

The hidden icons on do not appear on the task bar in safe mode so it's not really relevant. However, I have no problems shutting down in safe mode which is more than I can say for my normal windows session when the error occurs.

You can start several applications that shows in the notification bar til the hidden icons button is appeared. Start the applications from the publishers whom you trust only.

Thank you

Missing notification area icon

Taskbar notification area icon spacing
Hi all! Is it possible somehow to modify the vertical spacing of the icons in the notification area (systray) ? I set my taskbar height bigger than the default, so my icons are placed into more rows: http://www.sevenforums.com/picture.php?pictureid=1274&albumid=198&dl=1253871737&thumb=1 ...

Show Icon in Notification Area
"Show Icon in Notification Area when Connected" was removed from connection properties in W7 in the pre-RC builds and there was talk of it being reinstated for the RC but I can't find it anywhere in RC7100. I've got kind of used to seeing that net traffic blinking in my tray; anyone heard any more...
