I have a feeling Iím looking at a hardware problem,

Iím not that familiar with windows 7 at all, this is the wifeís computer. Just been lurking the site. I love my XP still

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thank you,
James

I don`t understand your problem. It`s going into hibernation just like it`s supposed to. And yes you will have to push the power button to resume.

And if you don`t install updates while your using the pc it will install them when you shutdown.
Perfectly normal.
no it is not hirernating, it shuts off while in use. on my computer when the computer is on a green bar is lit, and when it goes into hibernate the green light flashes non-stop and when it is off the light is off.
plus when you push the power button to turn it back on it goes through the whole boot process, just like it does when you turn it on after correctly shuting it down.

ok i'm at home on my lap top i had the wife just leave the computer alone almost all day. with her not using it but it running it never shut off, just went into hibernate, i woke it up, downloaded the avria program and the microsoft windiag. i looked at the memtest site and didnt know what version i needed so i'm going to do some research into that. i went to shut down the computer so i could restart in safe mode and it had 140 updates. as of (5:45pm central) iit has done 85 of the 140 and i started it at 4:35 time frame.

140 updates will take some time to download, install and configure.

As for Memtest, you want the x86 version for the 32-bit version of Windows or the x64 version for the 64-bit version of Windows.

It's going to take a long time to install all of those updates.

For memtest86+, here is a direct link to a bootable ISO (just extract it and burn to CD, then boot from the CD and let it run the tests for at least 3 rounds):

well it is done with its scan, only one detection ( FantaMorph.dll ) i guess it could be worse.
Now it is time to run the memtests now.

i just ran microsoft essentials on this XP system, and found nothing, i'm now loading the Avira onto here too seems like a no frills strait to the point program, and i like that.

well i'm done messing with this windows 7, i've never in my life.

i'm just going to swipe this hard drive on the wifes computer and load XP into it. microsoft really doesnt want anyone messing with this OS, it is designed for the common moron to operate, but to mod it you have to be a guiness in computers it seems like, im not a moron and i'm not a guiness either, there for i'm lost with this thing.

i really do thank you all for the help...

on the bright side i've had the computer on for 4 hours and downoaded numerous programs, some 3 times now( windows memory diagnostics) and it has not shut down once.

Great. Make sure you configure Updates to download and install automatically from now on so you don't have to worry about it. Be sure to keep Avira up to date as well. You can configure it to run a daily job to download the latest updates. It might be a good idea to turn off MS Essentials as well since you don't need it when running Avira.
