Changing fonts of pasted Japanese text (hiragana/kanji/etc)

Hey there. I am working with many Japanese phrases and have installed a number of fonts from this site:

Japanese Fonts - Japan Portal

In order to change copied text from gmail (such as メール) into these fonts.

However I am unable to do so. メール will not change into the new fonts. I can type in English after I choose the new fonts and it will display the text in Japanese characters, but I cannot alter the pasted japanese text into the new fonts. I'll upload a screen grab to show you what I mean: http://i.imgur.com/gIz8r.png
As you can see, the selected text is japanese copied from elsewhere. The font selected, 'citrusfruits' is what I downloaded. The text next to メール is the font correctly displayed by typing random english letters.

Any help would be appreciated. Tricky stuff.
