Disk read error and recovery disk not working?

Hi, I have a toshiba satellite C650 that has recently come up with a disk read error. I want to access the command prompt to try some potential solutions that I have read about on the internet. I have made a Windows 7 recovery disk using my other acer laptop which also has Windows 7 installed. When I use the recovery disk and it has loaded the files etc it just brings up a black screen and the cursor. Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening? I tried booting my acer laptop from the recovery disk and it worked fine. Also does anyone have any suggestions as to why I am getting the 'disk read error - hit ctrl, alt and delete to restart' message? Any help would be much appretiated, thanks.

Hi -- First go in and fill out your system specs completely. == Are both of the PC's using the same Win 7, Home Premium or whatever the case may be? Are they both OEM or Retail?

Somehow you have mucked up your boot loader. Create a system repair disc and boot from that. Click startup repair. You may have to run it 3 times. If you have a windows 7 installation disc use that.

I believe they are both running on Windows 7 home premium - the acer for sure as this one is mine. I think the Toshiba is home premium too but I am not 100% sure as it is my girlfriends. My acer is 64 bit but I am not sure about the toshiba.

I've managed to make a 32-bit recovery disc but that does not even begin to load so I am guessing that the toshiba laptop is also running on 64-bit. Anyone have any suggestions of what to try next?

I can't get start up repair on because I can't get the windows recovery disc to load up - it seems to load the files, but before the menu comes up the screen goes black with just the cursor there and stays like that
