computer showing folders and files that no longer exist?

I have a issue that is driving me crazy. when I upload a picture to flickr.com when I browse the folders for the pic I want to upload I can see folders and files that are not actually there. like they were moved or deleted but are showing up in the search. when I click on them of course it's empty.

I'm sure this is some kind of a thumbnails viewing issue or something that can be corrected. but I've tried cleaning up all the stuff I know about. like using the disk clean up tool and deleting all of the stuff in the %temp% folder etc.
I don't know what else to do.

how do I go about correcting this?

This is not something I normally recommend but try grabbing a copy of ccleaner.
    CCleaner - Download
    (it's free)
and use the temporary file cleaning only DO NOT use the registry cleaner part of the program.
IF you use firefox or chrome you'll want to click the app tabs first and check the boxes for those browsers.
I think as you apparently do that they are simply stuck in the file list. Ccleaner is the quickest way to get at that I know of.
