Windows 7: Won't Sleep

Won't Sleep

I'm sure it was working before but I have two installs and I've recently switched to my cleaner one as I was having other problems on the other one, so perhaps it wasn't ever working on this install.

It's not going to sleep automatically and when I try and send it to sleep manually, it just turns the display off which comes back on as soon as I move my mouse.

I checked there's no devices set to wake it (except the NIC which is set to only wake on Magic Packet), tried disabling "Allow the computer to turn off this device" for all the USB Hubs in Device Manager, even disconnected the USB hub with my mouse and keyboard connected (obviously I couldn't then initiate a manual sleep, but it still didn't auto-sleep).

I've disabled the Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service, so under Network and Sharing Center - Advanced sharing Settings - Home or Work it says "Media Streaming is off". Powercfg /requests shows nothing keeping it awake, so I'm rather stumped.

Ah, I seem to have fixed this. I had to disable Hibernation with Powercfg -h off and then it worked. Turning it back on again and it stops working again.

Before this I tried disabling some more devices in Device Manager, Disabling "allow this device to wake the computer" for both the mouse and keyboard and Disabling Wake Timers. The only issue now is that when I wake the computer, my mouse and keyboard don't work until I toggle my KVM to my other PC and back to this one, which I never used to have to do but I can live with that.

Be interested if anyone knows why I have to disable hibernation for sleep to work though. Hybrid mode was on which I understand causes it to create a hibernate file in case of a power cut but it normally works.

Try deleting the hiberfile using the commands here, then reinstate Hibernate with Hybrid sleep. Hibernate - Enable or Disable - Windows 7 Forums

I've got the latest ATI driver installed. The only non-MS services running are AMD External Events Utility, MySQL and Sandboxie Service, which are running on my other install where hibernate is On and it sleeps OK.

Unhide System and Hidden files at Control Panel>Folder Options>Viewm then check to see if C:\hiberfil.sys is still there. If so delete it, then re-enable Hibernate to recreate it and see if it was corrupt and causing problem since Hybrid Sleep requires it.

Next run SFC -SCANNOW Command

Nope, it's not there.

I tried re-enabling Hibernation and disabling Hybrid Sleep and then it sleeps, but if I re-enable Hybrid Sleep it stops working again (now the display comes straight back on again, whereas before it stayed off till I moved the mouse).

It's rather annoying me now that I have to toggle my KVM to get the mouse and keyboard working after resuming as well, as I haven't had to do that before.

Run a totally clean boot without AV or any of the others you're allowing in msconfig>Startup and >Services (after hiding all MS Services) to see if it works the same. If Hybrid will work then add back each allowed item until you find which one is causing the problem.

Are you using a lightweight (free) AV like MSE instead of bloatware AV?

Not using an AV on this Windows install at all. On my other one it's got Avira Antivir Free installed and Hibernate works fine.

As I said "The only non-MS services running are AMD External Events Utility, MySQL and Sandboxie Service, which are running on my other install where hibernate is On and it sleeps OK." My other install has maybe 10 extra non-MS services running in addition to those three and hibernate works fine, so I don't think the fault is likely to be due to one of those three.

I've done sfc /scannow and that found no problems.

Why would you have 10 non-MS services freeloading on your CPU/RAM, Startup and spying on you at all times? Click on a program to run it.

You need at the minimum Microsoft Security Essentials

Fixed this now after reading [SOLVED] GRUB + Windows 7 = Can't put windows to sleep/hibernate - Ubuntu Forums

Turns out that Hibernate (and Hybrid Sleep) don't work if the current System partition (C isn't marked Active, and as I use grub4dos to dual-boot between two Win7 installs, the other one was marked Active. After marking my current System partition Active and rebooting, Sleep and Hibernate work fine now.

Seems unfortunate that the user has to choose which Win7 install in a dual-boot can have working Hibernation but at least I know about this limitation now.
